I was thinking blue loctite because I'm neurotic about bolts that hold high-speed rotating blades in place. I don't get why I'd use antiseize? I usually use antiseize for dissimilar metals or high heat applications, I can't imagine a bush hog blade bolt having problems seizing up? Maybe that suggestion comes from first-hand experience in moister areas where the bolt threads rust up. I don't think here in eastern WA I'll have a problem?

I'm a big proponent of blue loctite ...

I wouldn't bother taking the blades off. Just make sure they swing okay. If they are super dull, you can sharpen them with an angle grinder (in any case, the blades should be a little blunt - not super sharp or you will end up making punji sticks).

If you are uneasy about this one, sell it for $600 and buy a new one for $1,200.

Previous owner of our property left this 5 bush hog behind. I can make out Kutter on the side, barely. I have never used one and I noticed this one has no bolt holes for safety chains or any obvious way to attach something to the front.

Should I try to use this thing, or just sell it and finance a new one with a new tractor purchase? I am looking at an L2501 or similar tractor.

Does that Oliver have a three point hitch for the mower? We used a 77 when I was a kid, didn't have a three point hitch.

Looks like it has been used as a mower for grass. I find if the 3-PH and tail wheel are straight and the PTO U joints are fine that is about as good as it gets. For clipping grass around the place, road sides, etc the lighter they are the better. It has not been used as a bush hog behind 60 HP based on the photos. It can set out for another 30 years and still be worth what it is worth today.

I use neverseize on the bolts every time I remove the blades. Blade removal goes like this; A 4 ft. pipe "cheater" is helpful on my 3/4 drive breaker bar to get the nuts off. After the nut and lock are off , I use a 1 in. brass rod and 4 lbs. hammer to drive out the bolts. There is no rust or corrosion.

If you feel better using locktite, be my guest. Be sure to write back once you do a blade removal. I curious how it will all work out.

Why remove the blades if you don't need to?

I would suggest being very careful for wasp or other stinging insects nest under it. Also snakes. Would not work on it sitting there. At least pull it away a few feet and have insect spray ready. I get amazed how quick will build a nest.

Zoom in on the first pic. Do I see a rubber guard underneath? Regardless, run it and see what its condition.
