SAFETY TOE BOOTS OR NOT.

Watch this guy who wishes he had steel toe boots when he cuts up a tree....it was a close call

Seems like he knows how to use the excavator thumb pretty well. If Only he knew how to use his own thumb to grab a handle.
....How does anyone even grab a handle with your thumb on same side as other four fingers? That seems so unnatural.

I've done it back in my landscaping days, when the numb coconuts on the tractor wanted me to hold up the end of a 12 foot long piece of granite while he reset the tractor bucket.
They teach you to do that when plowing snow, or so I've been told. It's a lot easier on your thumb when the plow snubs up on an unseen object.
It's also the wrong technique when using a saw.

My wife sometimes helps me in the shop. I have many, many, many discussions with her about safety. In one ear out the other.
I offered to buy her steel toe shes/boots, but she gave me every excuse there is.
Then one day she dropped a heavy steel base on her toes. Her toes darn near exploded in her sneakers.
They turned black and blue for almost a month. Losing the nail on ner big toe.
Guess who wears steel toe boots when she helps me now?

My wife solved the problem of helping me decades ago, by being more trouble than she's worth.

Forgive me if I missed it as I have been reading this thread on and off since it was originally posted.

Steel toes are just a part of the total protection a boot can offer. The second thing you want is metatarsal protection, which extends behind the steel toe and back towards the ankle.

Granted, sneakers are better than bare feet. Leather boots are better than sneakers, steel toe leather boots are better yet. And steel toe boots with metatarsal protection top the list...I think.

If there is something better please post it. Only thing I can think of that offers greater protection is doing nothing...and somehow that does not work in my case.

I wear work boots on the tractor, outdoor work and most of the time as daily shoes. Would wear steel toe boots if I could pair that fit right. I have wide feet (toes). One custom boot maker called my feet duck paddles. Have tried every brand and style of steel toe.

Sounds like you would be really good at swimming! :)

I like to think that if I came that close to chainsawing my foot I would put the saw away and try to be more careful another day! I always wear steel toe boots.

My son bought me a pair of these Indestructible Shoes last year. I still prefer my Red Wing model 1178 leather boots though just because it’s what I’m used to.

The Indestructible Shoes are comfortable though and have steel toes, a steel foot bed liner and look pretty nice.

MythBusters Episode 42: Steel Toe-Cap Amputation, Bottle Rocket Blast-off

Steel toed shoes arent worse than normal shoes. If something was heavy or forceful enough to squish the steel cap it would have squished your unprotected toes worse.

I still only wear old sneakers when tractoring ir tinkering. Steel toed shoes would be smarter but I don't have any & am not motivated enough to get a pair.

Part of the problem is possibly having to go in and out of the house fifty times a day. That makes work boots impractical.

I had a JD 640 Fork Carrier I was welding, fall on my toes wearing running shoes. I still remember the unbelievable pain. I think that was the only time I broke or cracked a bone, in my toe. I probably should have been wearing work boots.

Learned something interesting from the ER Doc the next day. He got a bunsen (sp?) burner and made a straightened paper clip red hot, and poked it through my toe nail, like a hot knife through butter. INSTANTLY relieved the pressure and pain. Easily could have done it at home.
