Tractor
2006
I'm trying to fix a tractor, left behind by my father in law that passed away recently, so my MIL can go back to using it to tend to their property. I was told that it stopped starting with the key one day so FIL was bump starting it with the solenoid I think, and eventually the starter went out and he possibly replaced it but determined the replacement was the wrong type. I found a fairly clean looking starter in it, not tightened down and not wired up, and I took that to Autozone and they confirmed it's good. However, I have no idea if it's the right starter because I have no idea what year or model this tractor is. MIL has been trying to find all the paperwork and title but no luck yet. She desperately needs this tractor and its brush hog up and running soon.

After looking it over all I've been able to conclude is that it has a starter half-installed(only one bolt tightened, not wired up) and when I took that starter to Autozone it tested fine. I have no idea if it's the right starter because I have no idea what model this tractor is. Once I figure all that out and can get a starter for it, or if this starter is correct and works, I then need to figure out why it won't start with the key which I assume is probably caused by an open or bad killswitch somewhere.

Any ideas on year/model, and any tips on sorting out the no-start issue?

Re: Need help identifying this tractor and getting it to start.

It's blue and had a New Holland 7308 loader so I'll hazard a wild guess and say the tractor may be a New Holland. The New Holland dealer may be able to tell you what models the 7308 loader was used on. The side of the transmission (sometimes right, sometimes left) usually has a data plate. This may give model number as well as serial number. Copy the numbers and take them to the New Holland dealer, too. With that information you'll know much more than you know now.

Which is why I posted it in the New Holland section. The "NEW HOLLAND" along the arm of the 7308 loader is good sign, too. ;)

I'll check for that plate on the transmission.

The canopy has a plate with a list of 7 compatible tractor models, but google searching those models didn't help much since they all sort of look like the same tractor to me.

Re: Need help identifying this tractor and getting it to start.

It is likely a New Holland 1725, 1925, TC29, TC33

Check the serial number plate.

Thanks for the video. All the stickers and such are worn out from sitting out in the weather so all those controls on each side of the driver are unknown to me, so that vid will definitely help me out.

Is the serial plate that data plate on the transmission the other poster mentioned above? I did a quick once over of the tractor and couldn't find any plates other than the ones for the canopy and the loader.

There are lots of threads on TBN about flawed ignition switches on these model New Hollands.

Was finally able to get a look at the tag on the transmission. It's a TC29D. Not sure what year it is, though. No date on that tag.

Post the unit number if it has one and the serial/tractor number. That probably starts with G.

Tractor Number: G040849
Unit: 3A08D

I probably won't be able to work on it until next weekend so the plan is to get the battery pulled today and put on the tender so it's charged up when I'm ready to get started. I'll reinstall the starter I found on it since Autozone tested it and said it was good, and go from there on troubleshooting. I've browsed a handful of tc29d no-start threads and it looks like it could be the kill switch under the left fender, the ignition switch, the relay for the ignition switch, or a wiring issue in the starting circuit somewhere.

Is it possible to get new decals for the controls? These are all worn out so I have no idea what any of the levers, buttons, and switches do without referring to an operator's manual.

Final assembly Jan 8, 2003.
Decals should still be available from a New Holland dealer.

That starter looks like the one I pulled off the tractor that autozone tested and said was fine, so I ran out there earlier to reinstall it and bring the battery back to the house to sit on the tender until next weekend when I have time to start testing things.

There are several safety switches that may have corroded connections which may prevent it from starting. That model also had ignition switches that failed.

There are lots of threads on TBN about TC29 and TC33 starting issues.

That is a good tractor and it needs to be running.

I found a video that shows where a few of the kill switches are behind the left rear wheel, and those are apparently the most common culprit of a no start issue if the ignition switch isn't bad. Now that I know what to look for I'm hoping I can sort out what the issue is pretty quickly next weekend and figure out what I need to order. New Holland Tractor Won't Start - YouTube

I'm having a bit of trouble finding a set of control lever stickers for it. Honestly may just use a paint marker and go by online photos or grab an operator's manual off ebay to make sure I'm labeling everything correctly.

Once it's running again I'll see about doing a full fluid change on it. No idea when it was last done.
