I have a YM155D that has had a rear axle seal for quite a while. I don't use the tractor much and if i park it with that side up it wouldn't leak too bad. But with the virus thing and needing the tractor to get things done i figured it was time to fix that problem with a few other things.
It is a little more involved than most axle seals as the whole axle housing has to come of transmission and the axle removed from the inside out so to speak.
I ordered up the parts from Hoye and the parts got here quickly. I had the rear assy torn apart and proceeded to install the seal. It is a special seal that incorporates a shim into it. I installed it using a flat block of wood and got it installed flush with housing and everything back together. I spun the axle a few times as i installed the housing back together and the following day spun it a few more times as i putting the rest of the tractor together. I kept checking for leaks. Then after about an hour the second day it started leaking again. Only this time worse. I called Hoye on Monday and verified maybe i had installed the seal wrong by using a flat block and i should have used a socket or pipe the correct diameter to install it. So I ordered another seal.
I just got done yesterday installing the new seal and within a couple hours it too is now leaking. This last time i was meticulous about installing it. I had the perfect size socket that only touched the outer edges of the seal as i tapped it into place. I made sure the axle shaft was perpendicular the the seal and assy as it too was installed. Am i missing something here?
I am reluctant to order another seal in fear that i would only have the same problem again. I am wondering if maybe i should try to get just a standard type shaft seal but questioning how to find out correct sizing to buy?
Any help would be appreciated. I am stumped.
I have included some pictures to better show my problem.
Picture 1 is of my tractor put back together but leaking.
Picture 2 is of my tractor torn a part.
Picture 3 is of the manual and #14 is the sleeve that is incorporated into the new style oil seal #15.
