I didn't feel like spending $500+ on a stump bucket so I made my own with the help of my brother (CAD support) and uncle (CNC plasma cutter). I made a timelapse video of the project and real-time video of digging up my first stump (don't copy my beginning technique....haha, learning curve). If you just want to see the Toolcat part fast forward to the 5min mark. :)

I used 5/16 A572-50 steel plate. Grade 50 so 50ksi yield strength but still good weldability. Other options out there too. I mostly copied (via pictures) other stump bucket designs out there with a few changes i preferred.

Here's a drawing you can use for personal use.

Yep, learning curve on digging stumps....I can relate. First tip is to buckle all occupants with seat belts as the ride might get a bit wild. I dug 2 giant (8ft dia) globe arborvitae out and they didn't come too easy. :muttering:

Nice looking work.

Any of you think a stump bucket could double as a large rock bucket? I have a mix of a few stumps and a lot of 2-3 foot boulders to dig. I see smooth sided rock/stump buckets and wondered if the saw teeth would get ruined on boulders?

Or would a short pair of pallet forks be better to uproot boulders?

Some companies advertise these stump buckets as rock buckets too. Certainly should dig up whatever object you want. It nice to have the concentrated lifting/digging point. I've also used a "root grapple" to dig up boulders but that was before I made this bucket. The only thing that would be handy for picking up rocks would be adding a hydraulic grapple arm to the stump bucket then you could dig up and grab and carry away. Might be hard to balance the rock in the bucket otherwise depending on the size/shape.

Yes I agree a grapple on top would make it perfect.
