Killing raccoons (NC)

Also, a lot of people don't know that you can very successfully hunt raccoons during daylight hours with an electronic call. Raccoons are so territorial, and so curious, they will not ignore an electronic call of raccoons fighting and will come out to investigate/fight.

There are dozens of videos on this on youtube. Here's a link to just one. See for yourself. It's much easier, safer, and productive to hunt them during the day VS night, dogs, lights, and your buddy Bubba sneaking around in the dark.

Appreciate the heads up on that ...

Can you describe how to set that up and when to use it? I have done some limited traps for squirrels and chipmunks which caused a lot of damage at one point but I just set the trap out by itself where only the squirrels or chipmunks would get to it. I found that basic rat traps (like jumbo mouse traps) work quite well on the chipmunks. But I did use a connibear 110 over one burrow hole that worked too (with a 5 ga bucket over it)

A Conibear 110 is too small for raccoons, I use the 220's. As I said, you need to make sure you use it in a place pets can't get too because these traps do not discriminate.

In the case of my photo, that is INSIDE the chicken yard which is a 54" cattle panel with chicken wire attached and goes up to 60". The raccoon either tear an opening in the chicken wire (I've since added 2x4" welded wire as well) or climb over.

The bucket set is a way to put your bait in the back of the bucket with the trap out in front. There are lots of YouTube videos on various ways to set up a trap.

Years ago, I trapped three raccoons, several skunks, and a cat with a live bucket trap. Trap goes on the mouth of a 5 gallon bucket and I set it with some old pepperoni as bait. Staked it out behind my house and just a boot every morning found something in it. I think I bought mine on Ebay, but it has been so long I am not sure. Simple to use, and pretty much fool proof. They made bigger cage type traps using the same door principle [ no bucket ] for catching larger game, dog's and other stuff. Mine was just gray, no fancy un-needed camo paint. And did not have to put any un-needed sealer on it when it was assembled into the bucket. Put a little pepperoni in front of the trip paddle, and a small pile behind it, then it trips when they paw at the stuff behind to get at it. Would not be that hard to make yourself..... You could upsize it with a bigger barrel, but you would have a hard time lifting it if you were planning on relocating the critter.

We have a female outdoor cat and the raccoons come and eat the food we put out for the cat. She just watches helplessly as it eats her food.
It’s a ridiculous cycle of frustration.
I can’t shoot it because the barn is too close to the neighbors house to shoot it and theyd call the cops if I discharged a gun anyway. The thing is BOLD. If I wave my arms at it, it just stands its ground.
Getting Rabies from a bite from one scares the bejeeburs out of me, too.

I'm so blessed to life where I do. I am not a huge gun guy. But I'd struggle living where my neighbor called the cops if I discharged a gun.

Yeah hes my only close-by neighbor. City slicker for sure. Wouldn’t know which end of a shovel to pick up.
If my garage opening was on another side of the house, it would have been dead 2 years ago.

Hay Dude - Live trap and then a 22 Short cartridge in a 22 caliber (non-semi) rifle. No loud crack noise.

Be warned that 'raccoon reduction' can lead to more turkeys hatching vs being eaten out of the nest as eggs. Would a guy even want more of them instead?

A fur handler's tag when you buy your hunting licenses is just a few bucks more. 'Coons released <5 mi away are sure to return the same way they found your patch the first time.

I use Duke 1112s for cats & 'coons. (HD large vs XL) Having the door farther from the pan helps it close before a 'coon feels it on his butt and backs out. That's common with traps whose door is inside the trap. btw, I limit trapping to inside the barn.

Michigan has 'modified' the simple bucket set, (min 8" setback inside) but specified an equally effective alternative that all but eliminates non-target kills. Duke DPs are superb, but must be well anchored. This allows the rest to keep frog and crawdad populations down along shore. "Would a guy even want more of them instead?"

They do make some extremely quiet 22 shells, you have to get fairly close but they will easily kill a coon.

I could shoot a 50 cal here if I wanted, but I use the quiet ammo so I don't have to use ear protection.
