CPAP cleaners stink!

I often thought about using a camera to watch my sleep. See, if I can gain some insight. The more stuff you can do for yourself, the better.

If you ever do a sleep study which is you go to bed in a clinic or hospital for the night, all wired up and they WATCH you sleep all night, the ceiling will have night vision cameras so as you snooze, they monitor every thing including, but not limited to scratching your gonads and farting while you sleep....

I know, I asked. Got showed the monitors too.

Now it you play with yourself in your sleep, don't know about that...:D

I can hardly sleep in my own bed. Sleeping anywhere else is an impossibility.

Reminds me of a childhood joke my sister once told me. He who go to bed with itchy bum, wake up with stinky finger.

I use Citrus 2 cleaner spray. It is nasty if you don't rinse it completely off though. I cycle through 2 masks with one being sprayed and left while I shower, then rinse and hang for the next night. Hose gets same treatment monthly. Change fine filter every month. Clean course filter every Saturday. Doing this for 6 years now.
without the CPAP I would start dozing off since I was so tired during the day.

The ozone ones that is. My wife and I both have sleep apnea. After seeing William Shattner carry on about them for the upteenth time, we decided to buy one for each of us. I did a bit of searching online and spoke to someone at the medical supply where we get our equipment.

That person said that the So Clean voids the warranty on Resmed CPAP machines so we went with the VirtuClean. Both use ozone but the VirtuClean only cleans the tubing, mask and resivoir while the So Clean cleans the internal parts of the CPAP machine.

Ozone stinks! You need to clean the mask with a wipe then allow air to blow through the tube about 5 or 10 minutes before using and it still stinks of ozone. My wife's sinus's got irritated. So, I did some more digging which I should have done to start with. Seems that these devices are not FDA approved and that the ozone may be harmful. In my case, it sure was unpleasent.

I wish my medical supplier had been more upfront about this but what with the restrictions going on, our personal contact was limited to a parking lot purchase. Also, with the VitruClean, there is no return unless you purchase directly from VirtuClean. That really stinks!

I have the same machine only by a different name and there is a slight ozone smell, my machine blows air for 5 min after cleaning to make sure all the ozone is gone, it recommends to wait at least 1hr before using though I wait 12 hrs, I do this once a month and in between the regular cleanings. So far no problems have been using it for 3 yrs. Had problems with the mask so I switched to the nose pillow and the tubing is on top of the head, such a great difference, the mask is made by Phillips and is called DeramWear.

Can someone please explain why so many people require this for the ability to sleep?

I mean, it's not like you aren't getting air, lying there snoring.

Yeh, actually it is. You quit breathing in sleep then wake to resume breathing. Apparently one doesn't have problems exhaling into a pressurized face mask, and the pressurized mask is enough to breathe without stopping.

Sleep apnea doesn't stop your heart, it stops your breathing. Your trachea collapses several dozen times per minute making you stop breathing. It prevents you from going into REM sleep, which is the deepest sleep, which your body and brain needs. It also puts a strain on your heart, which can lead to you having a heart attack in your sleep. The C-pap ( or bi-pap) pressurizes your trachea and stops it from collapsing.

Like someone else said, I never use the humidifier on my machine. My nasal passages aren't dry when I wake up. Not using the humidifier means you don't have to clean it very often.

My wife has what they call "central sleep apnea". Something about the brain not sending the signal to breath? Anyway, she has had several overnight studies. The last one went smoothly but for the two before that, not so much. She was in a room in the center of the building and there were tornado warnings. Guess where everyone else had to gather? LOL!

After I was diagnosed with emphysema, the pulmonologist had me do the overnight home study thing. I never had to spend the night with someone watching over me.

The residual ozone severely irritated my wife's sinus's. We both followed the same routine. Get up, put on a happy face, put the mask in the bag, hook up the hose and press start. After the machine cycled, hand up the hose, wipe down the mask with a CPAP wipe, let everything hang all day to air off. Before sleeping, hook up the hose and mask, start the machine and let it blow air for ten minutes which did not eliminate the ozone smell. I could have put up with it but why? Not knowing what the long term effects are and having to wipe the mask anyway?

I heard they do it in your home now. I always had mine done in a clinic or hospital. My last one was at least 15 years ago. Still a racket.
