In our woods. The mother moves it every day or so. I didn't touch it. 20200530_135356.jpg20200530_135412.jpg20200530_135621.jpg

Wife found this little guy on a walking trail by a lake. Busy trail. Surprised it didn't get squished. Probably newly hatched. We moved it to the lake side of the trail. Literally the size of a cough drop. I didn't have a coin for size comparison.

That's so cool!

I see them about the size of softballs quite often. I usually pick them up and place them on the other side of the road, whichever direction they were headed. Couple of weeks back, I saw one closer to the size of a car tire. Looked like one of those that could take a finger off. Or a hand. Didn't get close to that one.

Dangdest thing was, it was at the edge of the road, looking one way, then the other. Then back again. Waited until there were no cars close by before moving forward. Not making that up either. One of the few times I wished I had thought to make a veedeeoooo.

I was raking a pile of wet oak leaves a little while ago and there was this red eft. All these years my wife thought I was joking, finally found one to show her. image-asset.jpg

I see them often this time of year. If I can safely do it I will stop and help them across. The best way to move a snapper is with a shovel. You would think he would be more appreciative of your help. :D

A couple of times I've come across them laying on their back in the middle of the road. They didn't get that way alone, and I don't believe that it was devine intervention. :(

I've found a lot of baby turtles in my life, but that one it definitely the smallest one I ever found. We think it's a cooter.

I once found a baby snapper in fall just out of the egg, which was about the size of a silver dollar. I bypassed the survival of the fittest and carried it down to the water's edge. about 20 years ago I read an article on snappers in Fur-Fish-Game which claimed when a turtle lays it's eggs they winter over and hatch the following year but I don't believe that.
