Came on yesterday. I drained the filter. Is that all I need to do? The filter only has about 40 hours on it.

I have some type of water separator indicator and fuel filter on the M6040. No fuel indicator light anywhere. I've been pretty careful and have never had water in my diesel. At least, never anything that shows in the "water separator indicator". Knock on wood.......!!

Your real question is - where did this water come from? Did it form in the tractor fuel tank or do you have water in whatever you are using for fuel storage. I would be checking for water within your fuel storage system also.

Yes, that should be all that's needed to get the light to go off. Like oosik said though, you need to figure out how the water is getting into your fuel tanks.

As a precaution I'd find a fuel additive that can break down water in diesel fuel to a microscopic level. The additive should eliminate the possibility of a future biological growth occurring due to the presence of water in your fuel.

I use an Australian product called "Fuel Doctors".

Light went off. All seems good. I will look into an additive.

Do you have a locking fuel cap?

I spent a LOT of time trying to figure out why my NX was getting water in its fuel. I checked my tank, and found none; checked my Kubota, found none; checked my Polaris (diesel), found one; checked my generator, found none. Was dealing with some other issues with my dealer and just kind of tossed out that I hated their cheap locking fuel cap (chintzy as heck), only to have them send me a new one; the new one was much better than the original. As is typical of my dealer, there's never a backstory on anything (I'm always left guessing as to what the actual fix was, or why). Since then I've had ZERO water in fuel issues. My tractor was purchased late 2016. Got the replacement fuel cap 2018?
