I once found a baby snapper in fall just out of the egg, which was about the size of a silver dollar. I bypassed the survival of the fittest and carried it down to the water's edge. about 20 years ago I read an article on snappers in Fur-Fish-Game which claimed when a turtle lays it's eggs they winter over and hatch the following year but I don't believe that.

HOW DO BABY TURTLES SURVIVE WINTERS?

Here is what I believe is a painted turtle that we see on Sunday and we imagined she was looking for a sandy spot for her eggs.

That doesn't look like what we call a painted turtle around here. I could be wrong, but you might be thankful that you didn't try to pick it up. That head can go an amazing long way toward the middle of his shell.

From the stripes on the top i'm gonna guess at red eared slider

Yesterday near Rogerson, Idaho. Mountains in the background are in Nevada:

It took me a half hour to figure out how to post this picture. What a convoluted mess! Did anyone figure out what changed in the picture uploading process? None of the old ways I used work anymore!

Absolutely beautiful...and that is one vintage wagon, to be sure. If it's been sitting out all this time, the climate has been very, very forgiving!

Great shot! What do you suppose the distance is to those mountains?

That's such a foreign sight seeing so far across the flat terrain, situated here in the forested Appalachian foothills....can't see more than 10 feet tree-to-tree unless you get above the canopy!

About 40 miles. Right now, looking out my office window, I can see mountains that are 50 miles away. But that's nothing for out here. There's a mountain peak about an hour's drive north of me that I climb every summer. There is a informational kiosk on top that claims that on clear fall days one can see Wheeler Peak, 225 air miles distant.

I grew up in Pennsylvania so I know what you mean about the trees and limited visibility. After the Navy moved me to Nevada years ago I got used to the vast distances and when I'd go back to visit my parents in Pennsylvania I would get claustrophobic!

The Wheeler Peak in New Mexico? That is pretty far....

Anyway, a couple of pics of the sun breaking through the storm yesterday.
