Driveway Gravel

It varies from state to state on state highways and county roads. Anything federally funded (a US RT or Interstate) is covered by federal laws limiting weight. 34000# on tandem axles, 43000# on tri-axles, 18000# on a steer axle (depending on tire width.) Maximum loads depend on number of axles and overall axle spread. We could get about 12 yards on a 5 axle truck, about 32,000#. They just bought some 7 axle trucks that can haul 24 tons or so. We had a set of belly dumps with 7 axles (counting the tractor) that could gross 105,500 but they were the evception, 8 axles for that weight was more common.

Tailgating was the term we used to not set the spreader chains and just dump gradually while on the move, it would typically spread a box of pitrun 10" thick and 50 or so feet long. For a driveway we would set the chains and spread evenly, usually 3 to four inches thick.

Gravel is usually sold by the ton or by the yard, nearly all I dealt with scaled the truck and gave a scale ticket that had the a the truck company and truck number, the weight in and out and net and a time stamp. Any questions, ask to see the scale ticket.

That is all correct. All I referring to was a tandem which is by definition a 3 axle truck. I don't know anywhere you can legally haul 24 tons on a three axle truck or even axles that are rated for that much weight.

I don't know of any truck bogies rated greater than 44,000 or steer rated more the 20,000. Total GVW 64,000. Subtract 26,000 (probably more) for truck empty weight and that leaves a max payload of 38,000# or about 13 yards of pit run or 14 yards of crushed material. I totally agree with you 24 tons isn't likely on a three axle truck.

You are not getting 24 tons in a tandem dump truck. By law they are limited to 54,000 lbs. 34k on the tandem and 20k on the front axle. 24 tons is full load for a belly dump or end dump semi.

Did a little more research, Tennessee allows 74,000 on a four axle truck. The back three axles must be dual, and if they travel on Interstate highways or Fed Hwy routes, ICC bridge laws kick in, which would limit a tri-axle to 43,000# or less depending on axle spacing. So as long as said four axle dump truck is operating on county roads or state hwys, it is legal to 74,000#. The trucks look heavy though, and need to be to carry the weight, I doubt if the net load exceeds 44,000 lbs.

The empty weight of the ones I’ve seen are 28,000 for a tri axel dump truck.

Okay, all these prices you guys are posting make me feel ill. I just posted in the Today's Seat Time thread as I had a semi load delivered this morning. As it was for topping I bit the bullet and bought 3/4 washed. Then on top of that the closest place to get good gravel is 110 miles away. Ended up with 26.12 tons on the ticket and cost delivered of a little over $900.00, crazy. I checked 3 places and that was the best price quoted for a semi load with the next best being $1,150.00. Also checked 3/4 to dust and best price on it was $700.00 for a semi load.

Made the wife happy so probably worth it. She was not happy about the cost but wanted more rock on the turn-around.
