Interesting, but seems kind of pointless if you ask me. If it was the end of the world and that's all you had to work with, maybe.

Just last month my riding lawn mower died. I replaced it with a JD 570. The JD salesman called it a "lawn tractor". Lawn tractor-??? No FEL or possibility of such an instal. No 3-point system or possibility of such an instal. I got a fair deal on this unit..... so I didn't want to start an argument.

However - it does have a small plate, out back, with a hole in it. A trailer hitch - ?? I guess I could tow a fertilizer spreader with it or a small wagon.

The Farmall H was only 19 HP on the drawbar,
and has been mentioned that is not a sub compact, it is an under powered Massey which is getting by on some tasks,
good thing that hay was very light.

It obviously has about the same HP as the original. It is pulling a square baler and that takes plenty of HP just to get it turning.

The only problem with that tractor is fuel consumption, and engine life,,

Sure, that engine will rake hay for a few days,, then you will be looking for a replacement engine,, BTDT,,

The engine originally in that tractor was designed for 20+ years of daily hard use,,
Not so with the little air cooled engine,,

Torque gets it going, horsepower keeps it going... those guys are gearing the small engine to the moon to get a reasonable horsepower out of it compared to the ancient gasser that made 20hp at 1600rpm. I'm not going to do the actual math, but horsepower=torque(in pound feet)*rpm/5252, so to get that horsepower at 1600rpm (it's been a while since I've looked, I think the IH A and maybe IH M are rated around that speed) it takes a lot more torque than it does at the 3600rpm small engines are rated at anymore. That said, gearing the engines down the equation does work in reverse with leverage so it can put out the torque because of the horsepower it has at the speed it is running... so a 2:1 reduction would double the torque available.

It's an interesting concept, personally I'd want to keep a standard type clutch instead of a centrifugal, and I'd be adding some muffling to those things, that was obnoxious and I wasn't even on the thing!

There is also power curve to contend with as well. Sure, an engine might operate in a wide range of speed (500 to 3000 rpm), but there is a very narrow window where power is made. On a gasoline engine, that power band is quite a bit wider, but on a diesel engine it is really narrow.

Just because something can be done, does not mean it should be done.

wow, always somebody in the crowd. There is some truth to what I labeled the thread though. I have a subcompact and many have said its a toy not a tractor. Many debates on here about it. That being said form my experience, if you call a subcompact a toy and not a tractor then that is in fact an ignorant statement. I have said enough about it now because its a ridiculously immature argument. I know my tractor is not a toy and there is nothing anyone can say or do about it.
