I am looking to replace my John Deere D120 with a new rider. I mow about 3 acres mostly flat. What are some good mowers to look at? I am not interested in a zero turn. I would prefer something without a Briggs and Stratton motor since I always seem the have trouble with them. I am thinking a 46 to 52 inch cut deck would be ideal so I can get between some of the trees I have. I would need a rear bagger setup too. Thanks for any input!

Simplicity ;very well made and the prices reflect it.You didn't say what you want to spend. The Broadmore model is excellent but $5K.

I had a Simplicity Regent before the John Deere and it had a really weak frame. (too much flex) The body developed cracks after only 70 hours. Are the Broadmore's better built? I am open on budget. I want something that will last and is well built.

I have had good luck with John deere riders, my first one lasted 25 years or so. Shop at your local John deere dealership, not a big box store. Both my JD have Kawasaki engines.

Consumer level stuff is really limited to about two, MTD or AYP regardless of the color or brand name label. The width of the deck you're looking for will add significant cost.

How 'open' on budget. Some of the SCUTs can be had for around 10-12K with a mower if you catch the right promo.

It depends on different factors-How much $$ you have or deals offered at time of sale, longevity, acreage, size of mower, do you plan on just using it for mowing or will you use implements(means difference between getting a garden tractor vs yard tractor)? Comfort, cut quality, obstacles or slopes in yard? Ease of operations and maintenance.

Those things must be looked at as there are a lot of good brands now. It used to be the more $$ you spend the better but thats not true. You can spend 5,000 plus or 1100 plus and both will get the job done for years.

I have a Husvarna 24 hp 48 inch more since 2005(15 years almost and 500 hours)-its been bullet proof, only replaced the mower deck belt and battery once. Only thing to break was the throttle linkage which I welded myself.

Some have had issues with Husqvarna but so does any and every other brand. Big box stores or dealers the machine will be exactly the same accept the deck options. Manufactured decks are preferred over stamped on all brands and almost all brands offer both. Stamped is a thinner material and can rust out, bend or break easier but is lighter than the thicker manufactured decks.

Go test drive them and with a budget in mind, good sales people will ask you the right questions like acreage, if you have slopes etc...and make recommendations on models. Dont worry about brands so much.
Comparing Kawasaki vs kohler vs Briggs and Stratten is like racing fully loaded dump trucks. They all do very well and all have week and strong points. Comparing gas vs diesel is a much better point. Mine is 24hp but I will never come close to need that kind of HP from a yard tractor.

I am looking at the Cub Cadet ZT with 4 wheel steering next because of my slopes and all the obstacles I have to negotiate. If other brands offer the same I will check them out too.

I have a Massey Furgeson GC1723 with a mid mount mower now but I find that it is too heavy and wide for where I need to mow. Plus they don't make a bagger for it. I was considering an X300 or X500 series John Deere but I hate to spend that much money if they are poorly built.

My MMM is 60", so the 2-4 inches on either side going to a 52 won't make a lot of difference. Yes, the weight is an issue in some places (can't drive over the septic area for one). I don't have baggers on any of the riders, so no comment there.

My vote is to go for one of the sub $2K Big Box store riders. You'll get 5 years at least out of it. I'm going on 10 years with my $1800 Crapsman. I had to replace the transmission a few years back, but I think that was my fault for doing some thing that broke it.
