A lot of people who earned their money don't see the need to drive new cars. As on person who drives old junkers once told me: "If I want to go on a trip I'll just rent something decent."

That's the attitude which allowed them to accumulate their wealth in the first place... many of that type routinely post here on TBN. ;)

Buy What Appreciates...... have a look at Renting the Rest...... often worth considering..... Some inner-city-core people (with money) choose to not own a vehicle at all today.

Years ago, I heard through car circles that a Sr. member of an olde money Canadian family often drove a tired looking old Subaru...... back when suby was just quirky bargain-basement.

While I have no doubt that he had plenty of other rides at his disposal, some of that IMO was security related. Partly, a hide-in-plain-site strategy...... few people would give him or the car a second (or maybe even first) glance as he was driving down the road.... on his way to play polo with Prince Charles.....

Old vehicles can have many facets to them......

OTOH my old truck (2004 Ranger) has been sitting at the garage for over a month waiting for front end work while they play tiddlywinks... they told me when I dropped it off they wouldn't be able to get to it until the next week... which was the last week in May. Two weeks ago when I called they said "they had forgotten about it" but would get it in the next day. Last Saturday (6/13) it still hadn't moved so I went down and relocated it... parking it so that it was blocking two bays. Monday morning they said they would "get right on it"... Yesterday when I stopped by it was still sitting in the same place where they parked it last Monday. The service manager was off but they said to call him Monday to discuss what it would need to get a safety inspection. We already had this discusslion after it was on the lift 3 weeks ago... but the inspection sticker (required annually in this state) doesn't even run out until November and wasn't even on the list of what I asked for.
This is the third and last place in town I've been to which does front end work so I'm running out of options... "town" is 45 miles away.

My patience is wearing thin.

Can be tough getting shop-time. Commuters who come in screaming about their wheels often move to the top of the list. Problem compounds with fewer for-hire shops around.

As with most things, knowing That Guy always helps..... buddy of mine moved to the other end of the country not too long ago, set up a small shop at home, and pretty near instantly had way more work than he can handle. Demand is high, and guys that are fast, good, and honest are to be treasured....

For the right guy, I've never needed a bill (receipt) for my needs. If you can find a retired guy (or a young guy that doesn't like sleeping much.....) with a lift at home, running and getting the parts yourself and paying cash for the labour can help....... but still takes finding That Guy...... And with places like Rock Auto etc., running for parts is optional.....

I've seen less than 10 year old vehicles sitting waiting (parts availablity)..... they're all a pain when Down for Repair.....

Speaking of old rigs, I still have my dad's John Deere 6' cover crop disc with matching tooth harrows he built. My little Kubota 3130 has about the same drawbar horsepower his old Allis Chalmers WC had, and a drawbar implement works just fine.

I have also held on to my grandfather's 1 kg. Solingen cleaver. When I was a toddler, I remember him putting a sheet of plywood on the old oak kitchen table and butchering a cow in the kitchen. 2.2 lbs of steel goes through bones like butter.

I still have a powder horn my ancestors used on the Oregon Trail in 1846 that I use once in a while for Cowboy Action Shooting. Sadly, the flintlock they carried has long since crumbled to rust, the victim of lackadaisical black powder cleaning. I also have my grandfather's Winchester 97, manufactured in 1898. It's a pre-breakdown model, and probably rare as hen's teeth. I duck hunted with it as a teenager, but it hasn't been fired in decades, since steel shot came in. I keep it oiled.

I was an avid photographer once, and have several hundred slides, so I keep an old Carousel slide projector. I should scan them now that storage space is so cheap. I took photos all over the world, and slides were way cheaper than prints.

Hmm. Other old stuff...A banjo shredder for kraut, plus a 3 gallon and a 4 gallon crock that are both older than I am. I have two pitchforks that I used for putting up loose hay when I was a kid in the '50s. They still get used occasionally. I also have two sets of hay hooks, but haven't raised livestock in years. I have a 5' one man buck saw hanging on the woodshed wall as decoration, but don't use that either. I even have a couple pounds of lead arsenate insecticide, that I only keep because I'm pretty sure it would be about impossible to buy nowadays. It will kill just about anything, and make sure everything in the area stays dead for years. No, I haven't used it.

Farms collect things. There's always a corner in the barn for that old walk-behind sickle bar mower.

I found this on Google Images. A Jari mower like the one we had when I was a kid.

Very nice, never seen that brand before. I have an old "Simplicity" 2-wheel tractor with sickle bar mower, reel mower, dirt or snow plow, several different turning plows and a couple sets of discs. I should dig it out and revive it.

My father had one of those. He gave it to my brother, who sold it when he moved. It also had a snowblower attachment for wintertime.

It never even occurred to me that different attachments were available. We only had the sickle bar.
