Book a trolly tour and be the there before they open...

People don't seem to go early, you can ride the trollys all day long (getting on and off), and you learn a lot of information about the city from the drivers (be nice, bring a lot of 1's with you for a tip for the drivers who do keep you entertained along with information).

By trolly, you get "free" parking, you see the city at your pace, and free a ride back to your car. That said, when we visit, we usually come down for a day only from SC (about an hour north of Savanah), and if you're already staying in downtown Savanah, may not be worth the travel around town with free parking doing if by trolly if you're already there.

Savanah is a cool port town. Always love it when we're visiting. Lots of things to see and do. Touran trap for sure, but enjoyable for families, couples and singles.

I would highly suggest if you're looking at buying property, particularly within city limits, ensure you know all of the zoning and local town building ordinances. I could be wrong, but Savanah reminds me of Charleston SC, where it's a historical city and it seems like your buying into one great big HOA because those locations WILL NOT lose thier "old charm" apeal to the tourists. So if you buy property, ensure you know exactly what you can do with that property before you buy it. Perhaps no different than living in Taxachusettes:D

PS, if you have a New England accent, lose it if you're buying directly from a local and not using a 3rd party buyer in Georgia (Florida who cares). It could save you at least 10%:D (coming from a 20 year dam* Yankee to a Yankee)

Thanks for the heads up..I have been all over the country....many times people remark that I can't be from Boston because I actually pronounce my Rs....

For a "fine dining" experience off River Street in the city...

The Olde Pink House The Olde Pink House

Generally you'll have to book a reservation for dinner at least a week out. Lunches are generally easier to make on shorter notice Like any "fine dining" in any city, food is overpriced, but genearlly always good and it's a very eloquent restaurant.

The reality is there is a host of decent restaurants on River street (main hub of activity if you will for the town).

The Ultimate Guide to Exploring Savannah's River Street | Visit Savannah

Just do a webseach on cemeteries and churches if you're into that kind of thing. Host of history and most open to the public. I always find old cemetaries interesting as it gives me a different a perspective of where we're at now compared to our past history of people. Cathedral of St. John the Bapstist is nice stop to visit as well IMO Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist |

If you had more time, or things don't go as planned with property in the Savanah area, I'd suggest looking at Beaufort / Port Royal South Carolina, about an hour north of Savanah. We've kind of grown fond of that area as it's a much smaller scale to Savanah, but has the same "feel" to the area if you would. Hilton Head SC kind of splits the difference between Savanah and Beaufort to give you an idea, but those areas in SC have more of a "beach feel" than like Savanah.

That said, best advice is always from a local (I've been there for work numerous times in my past and the SC area is becoming a yearly vacation spot, but speaking only as a visitor and not as a "local" living there). I'd be picking joefromga on his advice on property in that area.

LOL

It took me about 2 years to learn to pronounce my R's after I left Cape Cod.

Been in NC for 20 years now. Still talk like a Yankee though, although every once in a while I'll find myself saying "ya'll" or a Wilkesboro "yeah boy".

It's way too hot to sit on an open station trolley bus for a tour. Lately it's been raining a lot so the humidity is over 90 percent unless the sun is out. It comes and goes so it rains then bakes the air then rains again. It's miserable. At least it's not cold, I guess. 2 weeks ago it was really nice.
But there are plenty of other things to do as suggested.
What part of town or neighborhood are you looking at purchasing?

Since we don't stay in Savanah as a family when we visit, this is exactly why we use the trolly. Free secure parking at the outskirts of town, and the "tour" consists of about 16 different points in the town of Savanah. You can ride the trolly for the entire tour (multiple "tours" if you wish during the day) or you can get off at any stop, walk, and pick up a trolly at either the same location or another location in the city where you walk to. I'm not in great shape now, but I can still walk, and even taking the trolly and getting picked up at 3 or 4 pick up points, by the end of a 9 hour day, we all seemed to be wiped out depending on how hot it is. On thing I forgot to mention is that they have some amazing antique shops in town. First time in with my 2-11 year old boys (at that time) I got freaked out as the one boy likes to see with his hands and not his eyes. Some furniture and older antiques had a going price of a new car or higher. Just kind of amazing to see some of the old things saved and sold in the city (way too rich for my blood).
