Oil with green tint

Ive' seen new hollands that have green looking HYD fluid. If it was water it would be milky, and if it was diesel it would smell like diesel. Ride on!

I replaced the hydraulic fluid and both of those filters just about the same time I did the most recent oil change. The old hydraulic fluid was quite milky, no idea how old it was. I changed it based on interval wasn't having any real problems with it surprisingly as it did look terrible.

Had a 70000 HP reduction gear with green oil...Brass worm gear was eaten up and it oxidized turning oil green.

That is usually due to the incorrect oil used in the gearcase. Yellow metals do not get along with EP gear oils containing sulphur additives, giving the oil a distinctive rotten egg odor. The result is often severe corrosion and erosion of the brass, copper or bronze material.

Newport News, VA...I was stationed aboard the USS Newport News, CA-148 when in the US Navy. You Coasties do an outstanding job. Thanks for serving.

That was one of the last class of truly beautiful ships in the Navy. Now the DLGs/CGNs were ok but just not the same as the old cruisers. Yeah when I was in we used to joke "we've been doing so much for so long with so little we can do something for nothing and still give you change back". We were still running a bunch of WWII vintage Navy AVPs and Ocean going tugs and cutters built in the 30's.

Yes, the big gunboats were impressive looking and with semi fixed ammunition for the main battery, turret cycle times meant that an 8/55 guns could out shoot the bag ammo 16 inch guns on the BBs. The CA 148 was the first ship to feature HVAC in the berthing spaces....Ahhhh...nothing like sailing on your air conditioned uncle's yacht. I was an FT in the 3/50 systems, MK 56 RADAR...my first inspection, my 1st class FT said, prepare the RADAR console room for Captain's Inspection. So, I opened up all the RADAR chassis drawers, removed the vacuum tubes (there were dozens) and washed them all. He came back later and almost had a stroke when he saw all those wet tubes. "That RADAR will never operate again" he stammered. I said, "Fear not, I'll have it clean and performing transmission checks in an hour". Little did he know, my dad had designed RADAR in the USN at the beginning of WWII ((We had no military RADAR early in WWII). As a kid, I had cut my teeth on electronics junk dad brought home and built stuff with it. We passed the CO inspection with high marks and later achieved an E for our RADAR director. Yes, you guys have been operating with hand-me-downs for years....nice work...you don't get the credit you deserve.

Thank you both for your service. Now a warning to all of you on a less revered government institution.....the USPS!

I can't recommend sending an oil sample thru the postal service. Tomorrow will be one week beyond the quoted delivery date of 6/27. The 3rd and final tracking history detail is from 6/27 "in transit to next facility" with no location given. The first 2 tracking items were when I dropped it off to the counter at the local office and when it left that evening.

Earlier in the week local PO said to wait a few more days they basically had no more info than what I saw online and then call the number. Called today and got a case started......wonder how long this can drag out with the holiday weekend! Think I will go pull another sample......

Happy 4th everyone!

Now, I don't want to get anyone angry here but, I also worked for the USPS when I was a kid in grade school. I was the Special Delivery boy in the small town I grew up in in Illinois. I also had two paper routes and the newsstand at the CNWRR station. I delivered all the Chicago newspapers, the Milwaukee Sentinel, the Waukegan News Sun, Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. When I graduated 8th grade, I had almost $3000.00 in the bank and Postal Savings Bonds (better interest than US bonds). That was 1953 and $3000.00 was a lot of money then. Back then, the Post Office got the mail through on time and a letter sent 1st class cost $0.03.

Today? The USPS is burning through money (almost $9 billion lost last year). Mail delivery should be outsourced or delivery services cut dramatically.

Lots of conjecture here. Nothing concrete...

I've noticed that as of late, the T6 will show a greenish color as it begins to darken as the hours accumulate and the oil starts retaining products of combustion. All my engines exhibit that green tint now so I have to assume it's something in the formulation as none of them have any mechanical issues at all.

It will go from the greenish hue to brown to black as the deposit concentrations grow.

Just stick with your recommended change interval or use a spectroscopic oil analysis like (Blackstone) to determine when it needs renewed.

Not a big deal.

Thanks 5030, that makes me feel better to hear someone with similar observations. I was trying to keep from using it until the oil analysis came thru but now with the USPS issues it will be 3-4 weeks ......right when I need it the most with vacation time and such to get things done.

I used it a couple hours the other day after we finally got rain to burn a few brush piles. Kept a close eye on the temp gauge and sound of everything and I am fairly confident it's healthy. Will keep using it I guess for now but still trying to get that analysis complete Asap.
