I recently came across an old woods M5 Dixie cutter. The deck and hardware are all decent but the gearbox is toast. Multiple cracks in the case, gears with missing teeth, and the entire lower seal is missing. A new gear box would cost more than the cost of a brand new machine. Does anyone have a wreaked deck with a good gear box?
My main question is has anyone Frankensteined their deck to accept a lower cost more durable gearbox? I'm thinking 1/2 steel plate welded/bolted to the deck and holes drilled to accept the gearbox of choosing. Thoughts?
