Bought a really old (30 something years) log splitter and hoses are shot. IT appears to have JIC -8f x -8f 37° connectors. How do I easily identify that they are truly JIC 37° and not SAE 45° connectors. Should I just take a piece of thin aluminum and accurately cut a 90° notch and just check "fit"?. Yes I know there those neat gauge plates with all the data but I don't really want to drop $20 for plate for this one time thing...

If your going to get new hoses made locally at a hydraulic shop or tractor dealer or auto parts place, who generally all make hoses, just bring in the old hose and and say 'I need one of these'. They will know what the fittings are and copy it exactly. If you have a tri-square you can measure the angle- if it's not 45 then it must be 37. JIC 37 would be most common.

Set a square over a male fitting. 45+45=90 and 37+37=74. The square either fits snugly on the taper or it does not.
Smart money is in the 37* side of the bet as 45* fittings are not typically used in hydraulics. They are far more common in truck air lines, propane and NG.

We have a winner, just need to find where my small "square" has disappeared to.... Pretty sure its JIC, but there is always the possibility I analyzed this wrong...

What GG says - post #3. I had to have two new hoses made. Just took an old one to the House of Hose in Spokane. Over and done in 20 minuets.

OH...I agree, but nearest hose fabricators are almost 40 miles away So I want to be sure what I am getting is correct.... This is what I get for living in the back woods of "nowhere" Kalifornia...

Other option I was contemplating was premade hose from someplace like Surplus Center...

Get 37° JIC, if they do not fit, change out the 45° fittings to JIC.

Call the local Auto Parts stores. I had a new fitting crimped on an old hose at NAPA yesterday.
