Utopia take 2

I avoided the first thread, but.....

At one point or another over the years, I've been in 49 states, some more than twice. Grew up in a northern state, large metropolis, miserable winters and summers. Crowds everywhere, high taxes and utilities, Insurance rates insane.

For reasons I won't go into very deeply, I found Lower Uncton. Hot, muggy summers but winters are generally mild. Yes, we get snow, ice storms and frigid weather, but it usually only lasts a few days to a couple of weeks before moderating. Taxes are cheap for what I have, under $400/year. Insurance isn't great considering the rural location with a volunteer FD. No codes, permits or inspections for most things. Only inspections required for me have been when I converted the panel to breakers with a new meter base installed and when county water came in and was connected. If I owned over 10 acres, that one would not have been required.

County Sheriff's office is something like 6 or 7 deputies. I rarely feel the need to lock doors unless I'm going to town. Most problems are between people that know each other or if a property is known to have been vacant for some time.

No serious fire threat. Field fires can be 20 acres, but they burn slow and can be managed easily.

Flooding is an issue, but we manage. I can be flooded in for weeks by water over roads, but there is never a threat to my house.

Utility rates aren't great, but not horrible either. Generally reliable, but outages can be lengthy.

Have very large lakes nearby, plenty of recreation for those so inclined. Major fishing locations that draw people from all over. A National recreation area and quite a few historic sites. Lots of times I can stand outside and not hear a single human made sound. Plenty of wildlife including Bald Eagles.

Plenty of work if you want to drive 20 or more miles each way, or work in agriculture or quarries.

Most retail places are 20+ miles, so you have to plan your trips. No five minute runs for a gallon of milk.

Utopia? OK for me, but maybe not the best place for all.

Western Montana in the Northern Rockies.
Our dream became a reality in 2017, still in transition, we lost our farm in the flood in the midwest last year which sped things up in some ways and slowed it down in others.....
Sunrise picture in Montana was last week, sunset picture in Nebraska was taken tonight.
With views like this in your front porch, I guess being in limbo isn't as horrible as it could be but can't wait till we can be in montana permenantly, that's OUR utopia.View attachment 664194View attachment 664195

A couple years ago I rode from Jackson Hole to Glacier, across the top of Montana and down at a angle to Sturgis. Beautiful country.. But I don't want to own a snow shovel

The term I hear a lot of work is searching for Mayberry...

So far the contenders are AZ and Idaho... more coworkers heading those directions than anywhere else.

As a kid it was the Sierra Foot Hills otherwise known as Gold Rush territory...

Later there was a rush to Oregon followed by Nevada including Tahoe side.

Currently it is Idaho hands down... two co workers there this week and one last week scouting property...

As hard as it is to believe I really would be happy here if I could go back in time or make a few changes...

Hands down I love the SF Bay Area weather... no need for heat or A/C... growing up the only time the heat was on was Christmas when extended family visited... just about anything grows which is a bonus... fresh fruit year round.

The water shortage rationing was the first shot across the bow and why I like Western Washington... lots of water and good water at that...

Right now the Fire Situation continues to plague large areas of California and no matter who's fault it turns out to be in the end property owners pay one way or another.

Always blessed with great neighbors which truly is a blessing... no matter in California, Washington or Austria...

First time that I ever went to Texas was back in the 90's and I flew into San Antonio. I didn't like it, but as I drove out of the city and into the Hill Country, I was surprised at how nice it was there. Kerrville and Fredericksburg where very nice. That's when I started thinking about moving to Texas. I spent a couple years looking around the state to see where I should go and ended up in Tyler because of the economy there and cost of a home and land was also very attractive. Tyler has been very good to me, so no complaints, but I still think the Hill Country is a much nicer area of Texas.

You definitely made a good choice!

I haven’t been in every county in Texas but I’ve been in a lot of them and I have been in every region of Texas. There is no where I don’t like and couldn’t live. I prefer some areas over others, of course. Tyler is very nice.

Now, take Noonday south of Tyler on Hwy 155. They have every essential. A good tractor auction and one of the best gun shops in Texas.

Californees going to Ideeho or 'Zona are among the biggest reasons I will never go to either. They won't go and adopt the local ways. They want to take their ways and impose them on others. We're from Californee and we're here to help!!!!

I feel that most of us dont have a Utopia yet because they havent been there yet. As for me like I stated in the older thread, it is currently South Brazil. Prior to that it was where I am now in Maine, was going to make my property my own oasis. I currently have two Utopias if thats possible.

So I will now spend 6 months in Maine during summer which is Brazils winter and 6 months in South Brazil for their summer which is our winter. The only thing I dont have figured out is...

How the heck do I manage my property in Maine during the winter? I really dont know...I have even been working on automating it like switching to natural gas and adding wifi thermostats.

I thought about renting it but renting it for 6 months during the winter? No one will want that...

No doubt could be very true... funny thing is these Californians for the most part were not born in California so non-native.

Lots of the Docs are East Coast NY MA and PA and surprising number of older RN's from the Midwest... most of the under 40 RN's have ties to the Philippines.

It ain't just Californians. Here in northern New England it's people from Mass. or Conn. They wanna move to the country to get away from all the city crap, and (in theory) enjoy the "simpler life" in the country. Then they want all the amenities, zoning, etc. they had in the city.
I'm sure it's true in every part of rural America...only the cities/states the crowds come from change.

My snow shovel is more of a 72 inch 3 point mounted snow blower an the back of a Massey 1755D to clear the 7.5 mile one lane road down the mountain to the hiway, but I couldn't trade it for all the tea in China or gold at Fort Knox....
