Bird feeder ideas

How long is the galvanized duct? Attach with screws? Do you flatten the duct to match the shape of the 4X4s or just leave it cylindrical?

Standard 24" length available at Big Box stores. Stock 7" diameter provides clearance around a 4x4. Used 3" roof metal screws on each of the four sides of the timbers (arrows). Added short pieces of 1/2" PVC pipe as standoffs/spacers for each screw. Theiving little acrobats found that they could stand on another's shoulders and get over the first 24" piece, so I had to add another piece above it.





I was afraid I'd have an issue with wasps or spiders nesting inside, but so far that hasn't happened.

If you want to keep the birds from pooping on the deck,,, and not move the feeders,,,
then, my brother found the trick.
He saw it being used on the east coast of Virginia, on docks,,
then he tried it on his deck, in Colorado.

String some clear fishing line (thinner is better) from the house to the corner of the railing on the deck.
The fishing line is installed at an angle, like from 6 feet high on the house, down to 3 feet high at the railing.

The birds will fly to the deck, run into the fishing line, and never come back onto the deck.
My brother had a half dozen near by neighbors feeding birds,, and his deck was getting bombed!!
The fishing line stopped the birds, and it is almost invisible,,

The birds will still go to the feeders.

wife has several feeders. she cuts sections out of trees just under 4" diameter for posts. keeps a couple branch stubs on the top section for the birds to hang out on.. Before she puts them in the ground she slides a 4" pvc section over the tree. Covers from the ground up to the limbs Squirrels and raccoons cant get up.

Built these tonight. Need to grind down some crappy welds and paint them and I値l see how they do!

I like the look of how you finished off your shop. The metal seems to brighten up the space. What material did you use on the walls? I assume this is a metal building.

40x60 shop. Builder wanted to do all tin, I just wanted OSB, he REFUSED to put OSB on, so we compromised and did plywood, then painted it.

Appreciate the picture and instructions. :thumbsup: Does "so I had to add another piece above it" mean the length is 48"? :confused3:

Yup. Probably just could have moved the one piece up higher so they couldn't reach over it, but it is what it is.

We have feeders on Shepard hooks but have to take them in nightly because of the bears who would run off with the entire feeder. Now we have had to putting in a couple of Shepard hooks with hanging plants around them because the hawks thought the goldfinch and doves were a good snack.
