Sadly that article is not worthy of the late great Malcolm Forbes.
So what if cobalt and other things come from dirty sources? This is solely due to irrational US environmental activists in the EPA who have prevented clean American production if not-so-rare rare earths.
Furthermore lithium batteries do not consume those materials. The raw materials are recoverable when battery cells reach end of life.
As for coal-fired electricity, USA coal generated electricity moves a power hungry Tesla Model S a mile for about the same emissions as a 30 MPG gasoline vehicle. Model 3 is about same as 45 MPG. But the EV has the advantage of being able to effortlessly use nuclear, natural gas, coal, hydro, solar, what have you. The gasoline vehicle requires great effort to dilute gasoline 10% with ethanol, for questionable net energy or environmental benefit.
