I stopped giving money to all middlemen 40 years ago.
I give, but I look the person in the eyes when I give, that's the only way I give. Too many shenanigans going on when the middle man gets his mitts on my money. You know like the Catholic church to pay off all the pedophile priests.
I'll walk into a homeless shelter and drop off a trunkload of food, I'll use to walk up to a guy asking for money and hand it to him no more, mostly they beg for food and only want the cash for drugs, cigarettes etc. A guy was holding up a sign "WANT MONEY FOR FOOD". I was near an In N Out burger joint so I bought him the works. I drove around the block expecting to see him enjoying the burger and he tossed the whole bag of food on the ground and then proceeded to hold up the sign for more money.
From that day on I never will give a dime to these beggars. What I do is carry a case of water in my truck. Out here they beg in the heat 120 plus so I'll hand then some water and a chewy bar, but never cash.
I remember one Thanksgiving when my heart was failing ) before I had heart valve surgery) and it was all I could do to walk to the restroom in the house. The local homeless shelter was crying that they didn't have enough food for their thanksgiving dinner.
I gathered the wife hobbled over to Costco and bought a dozen turkeys and cases fo veggies etc. When we arrived I was useless to carry this stuff in from the truck so I asked my wife to get some volunteers to help.
NOT ONE Son of a gun offered to help my wife. They stood around drinking coffee and smoking while she made several agonizing trips in and out with their food. You can bet your life that was the last time I ever did that again.
Now I'll engage in a conversation with a waitress, maid, bus person, Gardner etc. If in the conversation something triggers my spirit, like a single mom waiting tables to support her kids with two jobs, then I'll drop $100.00 as a tip on a hamburger. If a person is an extremely helpful kind, hard worker helping with something at a store, I'll drop a "tip" on him or her.
Workers NO OWNERS that come to my house for any work knowing they're getting paid lousy money but doing amazing work - they get tipped.
You've all seen this I'm sure
