Since there are a LOT of system apps is there any good site that list most of them so I can determine if I can just delete ones I don;t need?

/edit - like what the heck is the app simply labelled "Black" that takes up 32.77 KB on my Samsung A20?

nope..dont agree. its another total invasion of privacy.
Same here, I want an app, tell me it's out there but let me decide whether to download and install it.
The latest update turned on a bunch of settings I had turned off, one of them being location. Yeah it's in the EULA but you have to be a d&&n lawyer to understand it not to mention set aside 20 mins to even remotely digest it. My phone is mine not Googles, not Apples, not Samsung etc, I bought the thing................Mike

This is not new to me at all. I knew it was coming as it was discussed openly in the news. I only wish it was more common and country-wide instead of only some states taking advantage of this great tool to do contact tracing. Not sure why so many want to fight the tools and means to bring covid to a tamed state.

The "black" app is likely bloatware added by the phone manufacturer. A Samsung specific forum might know for sure.

Much of the time, esp. when mobile, my phone is in Airplane mode.

Realistically though, with a modern phone, you don't really control much of anything on it 100%. The only real off switch is having a removable battery.

As tempting as it may be to stop doing updates, that can also get you into trouble. The updates often fix vulnerabilities. It's fairly common for malware to attempt to exploit old vulnerabilities, in hopes of finding a device that hasn't patched it.

I've been happier with the security approach with iOS vs. Android. Perhaps it's changed in recent years, but when installing an app, Android took an all or nothing approach. The install tells you the privileges required by the app, and if you don't like it, your only option was to not install the app. Also, the privileges had very cryptic names, so it was difficult to understand what the app could access.

For iOS, each app gets installed in it's own "sandbox." By default, the app has no access to reach out beyond its own area. When the app attempts to reach out to something, like your photos, it provides a message about what it wants to do in plain understandable language. The user has the option to allow the access or not.

As for the Covid-19 item in the OP, I don't have a big problem with it. To my understanding, it's an infrastructure functionality that could be used if you install an app that will use it. I don't think it's too sinister.

Because it's a civil rights violation! How would you like it if someone entered your house without knocking and started looking around to see what you had and who was there? What if that person said it was to protect your health and safety? What if that person took up in your easy chair and said he's "staying to watch over you"? Would that make it alright?

I looked on my phone. It's there as a turned off option. It also says it needs a participating app. Thankfully, I don't have a "participating app" that I know of.

Nope!

Civil Rights

Civil rights concern the basic right to be free from unequal treatment based on certain protected characteristics (race, gender, disability, etc.) in settings such as employment, education, housing, and access to public facilities. A civil rights violation occurs in designated situations where an individual is discriminated against on the basis of a protected characteristic. Most civil rights laws are established through the federal government via federal legislation or case law.

....

Don't like it? Why did you agree to it?

You gave them permission when you agreed to their terms of service (which you didn't read, and neither did I ).
