A friend found an ad for a 2010 Kubota M5040 open station 4x4 tractor. the ad says 8x8 transmission.
Can anyone provide any more info? Like how many ranges, how many gears? Can this be shifted (with clutch) on the move ? Or must you stop before each gear change?
How about for forward to reverse? Clutch needed? On the move, or must stop first? :anyone:
THANKS!!

I own an old JD and am not familiar with Kubotas

I believe that will be four speeds and two ranges. You do not shift gears while the tractor is in motion, you select gear and range before moving. You definitely use the clutch to switch between forward and reverse and NOT when the tractor is in motion. You should also depress the clutch before engaging the PTO. 2010 would be a good year as it predates the EPA mandated Tier 4 pollution requirements for off road vehicles.

Should be hydraulic shuttle with wet clutch packs.

No clutch required to go forward or reverse, or to change direction.
2 ranges High & Low (stop, use clutch to shift)
4 gears (H pattern) synchronized, use clutch and shift on the move.
IPTO, no clutch used, engage on the move.

My 2010 M6040 has this trans.

Thanks! I was hoping it would not be like my 46 year JD 2030 with collar shift. I have to STOP for any change; gear, range or direction.

Shift without the clutch for F & R would be great. Clutch and shift on the go for gears better too. Not a big deal to stop for range changes.

Any known problems to be on the lookout for if we go look at this tractor? Supposed to be a 2010 with less than 700 hours.

I have a 2009 Kubota M6040 with hydraulic shuttle shift. It has high/low range, 8x8 transmission- high/low range can only be shifted with the tractor completely stopped and clutch depressed. Hydraulic shuttle shift lever - direction can be changed( forward/reverse) without the clutch but only when the tractor is moving slowly or stopped. Main gear shift lever may be changed, while in motion or stopped, but the clutch must be used.

The synchro shift model has the same requirement EXCEPT - When using the synchro shuttle shift lever - you must use the clutch.

This info is directly out of my tractor OP manual. It covers the M5040, M6040 & M7040 models.

I make it easy on myself and use the clutch for all operation on the transmission.

BTW - if your friend does purchase this unit - be certain that it comes with the correct OP manual for the tractor. There is also a separate OP manual for the FEL - if so equipped.

The only recall/upgrade on my 2009 M6040 - reinforced side step. I purchased the tractor in June - this upgrade was done in August of the same year. This should be standard on the 2010 model but it's worth asking if it has been done.

There will be a raised, chrome plated "medallion" on the side of the hood - either, Synchro shuttle or Hydraulic shuttle.

Thanks for the info about a medallion on the hood. I have not heard if he is interested in looking at, but wanted to find out about the transmission operation.

Z5 - I say "medalion" because I don't know what to call it. It's silver plated, raised script writing. It will say - KUBOTA M5040 Syncro Shuttle or KUBOTA M5040 Hydraulic Shuttle. This will be on both sides of the hood. I hope it's a good buy because, as we all know, a tractor this size with only 700 hours is barely broken in. View attachment 665727. There - you can see part of it on my hood - behind the FEL arm.

It has R4 tires, it is 4x4, open station, Kubota loader, and Bush Hog brand rotary cutter. Asking price is $17K. Seller stated 700 hours, 2010 model year, 8x8 transmission.

Price sounded real good to me, but I own JDs and am not familiar with Kubota pricing. I do know they are well built tractors.

I agree, 700 hours is nothing to worry about. My used JD 2030 had 3000 when I bought it at 20yr old.
The ad had a picture, but the loader blocked any markings on the hood.

I would be cautious. At $17 K that's more than just a "real good price". I would have it checked over very well - there could be something wrong with it.
