Tenant called to say no hot water and I went to investigate.

Found pilot out and relit... kept going out after a minute...

Cracked the supply and no flow...asked if Bill paid?

Went to meter cracked union on output side and nothing... cracked on supply and flow... called utility and about a minute had live person...

Explained verified no flow on Smart Meter and dispatched became concerned... explained I maintain steam boilers and dispatch put in request.

Fifteen minutes service arrives... I've had days before.

Service confirmed bad meter and replaced...

The original meter had been there 1957 to 2015... Smart Meter 5 years.

In 35 years first time I come across no flow defective meter let alone heard of it.

So glad to hear nothing burned down - nobody hurt. Gotta admit - you situation is the first I've ever heard of a defective meter - Re, natural gas. Anchorage ran on natural gas. One of the fellows in our local 4WD club was a service tech for the local gas company. In all the years knowing him - never mentioned having to replace a meter.

Just goes to show the "advantages" of a Smart Meter - quick service calls.:dance1:

Was it the meter or the regulator. Ive had quite a few defective regulators fail over the years....mostly due to too much btu being drawn out of a small, basic meter. Its amazing how many people just keep adding new devices and never increase meter size. I especially find these on owner installed generators.

Gas company here (National Grid) just replaced my perfectly functioning Smart Meter.
Installer stated they are required to replace their meters every 7 years.

That's why they are called Smart Meters... they retire at an early age. ;)

Not just gas meters either.

A few years ago the electric company changed out my electric meter for a "smart" meter that they wouldn't have to come read every month. They had to change that "smart" meter again this past spring when I found I had no power. Service tech told me these new meters last only a few years - he carried several on his truck, changes them all the time for people. The old style meter I had was in service for 20+ years that I know of, since I moved here.

Regulator was not changed... just the meter.

I wondered if Gas Smart Meters can be remotely turned on and off like Smart Electric?

Utility had been out twice in 23 months to replace my home electric meter... I have not bought a Watt since solar commissioned...

As for meters... changed out a lot of electric going back to the 1920's... 120v with brass wing nuts and no meter base... Reason for change is insurance company aggressively canceling policies on older homes with fuses... 240v service upgrade.
