When I was a kid, dad had two tractors and I bought one of them back from the farmer that he sold it to.

It's a Farmall BN and the farmer converted it into a fork lift, some day it's going to be put back the way it was when dad farmed with it.

As we get older that becomes very important, hope you do that, I'll go see if I can find a picture of that model.

You can make anything you want out of ash, but be prepared for it to rot really fast with ground contact!

SR

I cut down a big ash almost 6 years ago now, let it sit for a year on log pile then decided to mill it before tolate. I didn't know what to do with it so sawed a big 20'x 10" x 12" out of it, then we stuck it under my sons deck in 2016 and there it sat, last month my son wanted to add a roof on his deck and wanted a 20' beam, instead cutting down the very few big trees left we pulled that ash out put it on saw deck and re-trimmed it and he used that to hold his porch roof up, he said it was still solid and little hard to nail to but filled the void. When I see that ash up there on his porch I said gee that should've went in your house that looks nice.

I remember 60 years ago my father use to make ax handles out of ash and sold them down the store, wonder why ash........

Poplar makes good trim though.

Yes I agree ash is still very popular wood to work with, I'll take my ginger ale in glass bottle................

I think that's why I have a fondness for the old tractors really. Reminds me as a kid pulling firewood with it. He grew up on a small farm so they used them quite a bit. But just after I showed up his family had a feud, grandfather died and it sat then for a long time. When I was young he got it going again but all we did with it was to transfer firewood with it from an old hayfield across the river to our home a mile away. Terrain is so bad here that generally a tractor doesn't work that well for wood. Although one time many used them for that purpose. That's also a reason I like the tractors and firewood thread. Most nowadays Most don,t have tractors and because of the rough ground both hilly, and soft, many cut wood with snowmobiles or atvs. But I certainly miss those days of listening to that farmall chugging away with loads of firewood. I bet we hauled two cords of yellow birch behind that at a time. I know people would turn their heads if they saw me pulling wood with those winches like you fellows have. Most here have never seen one before. Hoping my job is still around after this covid slump, I get this house finished, I’m to get one.

Oldpath, how much wood would he pull behind that little case? How many horsepower was that?
Exactly, I did the same thing and even help father hauled out some logs back in the 70s.

That old Case with half-tracks and pony wheels on would pull half cord in most places anytime, was great in snow and mud, on easy going I rounded up the 12' long trailer one time, think I had a cord on, when I got out the house father complained I put to much on but you know how it is when young, Father always just 1/4-1/2 cord on which is the right amount. I think that 48 Case was a 30hp tractor, I gotta see if wife has any picture of it from 40 years ago or maybe my older sisters.

Not sure how green it is, looks like that bark is sluffing off pretty good.

Ooops, looks like that was already pointed out...

I meant the color of the wood not dryness. It does look like it was dead though.

I was out burning some old burn piles when the storm came up, started raining pretty hard so I went in. The one that hit the house hit just as I was getting out of the shower!! I'm a little worried about my well pump also, middle of the night last night I had almost no water pressure.. seems fine this morning but we'll have to see, fingers crossed!
Yeah, I need my ceiling fans too, bought a replacement yesterday and will install it today.
Sure hope I don't have to pull my well to replace that pump!!!!!

WOW, that would've jumped me, it must of shook the house. Seems so the lightning would only effect the well pump if the pump was running at the time, summertime is a good time to loose a pump if there was such a thing as a good time, hopefully yours is ok. I dread the day if my pump goes in the winter, I put the Goulds pump in back in late 80s, I dont know how long they'r suppose to last but if it was replaced now I bet it wouldn't be of the same quality.

When dad bought the BN, it had a loader on it. lol That was quite a contraption, that dad promptly removed it and put it in the iron pile!

The other tractor we had at the same time was a Farmall H

BTW, I think those Cases were about 17 hp...

That Case had 4 cylinders had to be more 17hp, my riding lawnmower is 2 cylinder Briggs and thats 21hp.

I just want to know the thinking on buying a Farmall BN, or better yet who's brainstorm idea was it to make that contraption anyways, you got it right "contraption" was the right description. Might be ok to work in the garden with that offset steering wheel but it would drive me crazy, I heard that..........

Now this is my idea of a tractor!!!!!!!!!!!! The Farmall H, now just make it 4wheel drive, go slower and put a FEL on and we got a deal, although I bet it would go great with half tracks and pony wheels on it ......
