I thought INFORMED people here on TBN realized that political commentary is TOTALLY inappropriate!
Editor: Please shut down this thread for such political commentary!

If you'll notice, a Mod not only quoted a political post (40), but responded to it with a joke (47).

I don't get to our airport very often for work, but when I do, I see UPS and FedEx planes often.

Since a majority of mail goes by air today, and you don't see any USPS planes, that could by why USPS contracts with UPS and FedEx.
Just think of the additional costs if USPS had to own and maintain their own fleet of planes and hire pilots and ground crews.

On a side note to current operations, I have some inside connections with the USPS system. Currently, they are handling far more packages than normal due to Covid online purchasing. With envelopes, USPS is handling that end fairly well, considering. With packages, they have warehouses and semi trailers loaded, but nobody to deliver the stuff to the area distribution hubs. UPS and FedEx are in similar situations, but they are set up better for package delivery and don't have to deal with letters.

I understand they have contracts with UPS and FedEx. I thoroughly enjoy these threads that talk about and discuss shipping companies... Honestly I do.

The slow down comes from many things combined...more people are not only buying more online to avoid physical stores, but companies now working half shifts to create space between employees, so less orders are processed in a day, not enough delivery drivers for all these packages, not enough delivery vehicles to load all these extra packages onto (seriously), there is now a more broad range of people buying online also...I know people that never liked buying online, but not have to due to age and health.

You say you have an inside source, and I understand every area/region is affected differently, but where I live, I am the inside source. Worked here 18 years now, same operation. Our drivers deliver everything loaded on their truck. An attempt must be made. Drivers are going out with delivery stop and package count numbers they only see at Christmas. Some work 60hrs, I'm working almost 70hrs per week because of my role.

My area could very well be different than yours or anyone else in this discussion.

I don't try and ruffle any feathers or annoy anyone. I see what is happening on a daily basis, so I get to experience it from the package drop off up to the actual delivery.

And just because a label was created, does not mean it was shipped. It bothers me that companies do that z then ship it days or a week later...

Last February I put a deposit on a piece of land. I originally went to the realtor's office to drop it off, but for some reason there was nobody there, and no good place to leave it. I went to the post office less than 1/2 mile away, purchased an envelope and mailed it. That was on Friday AM. They received it on Tuesday... it took 4 working days for it to go 1/2 mile.

^^ If I drive to the Post Office and drop an envelope in the box in front of it addressed to the bank next door to it that shares the parking lot (not that I would, but just for illustration), that envelope would travel over 150 miles round trip via a sorting center in another state. That PO used to sort and process local in town mail until an 'efficiency reorganization' a few years ago.

Ditto here. Most post offices had two slots; one for local mail, the other for the rest. As you say a few years ago they changed all of that; also, the hours at my local PO were cut so that they're only there from 8:30-11:30 then 1-3:30. I couldn't begin to guess how many postal clerks they've gone through... who can afford to work those hours? The last guy left after it was discovered he was allegedly supplementing his income by stealing checks and money out of envelopes.

Locally they cut the office window open hours but didn't cut employee hours. Still trying to figure out the savings. The office is still open for rented mail boxes and you can hear a group in the back laughing and telling jokes. Maybe this is how the packages get scanned 4 times locally.

Order placed Aug 8, picked up in Crestwood, IL by USPS on Aug 10 @ 12:48, departed the post office in Midlothian, IL at 19:59 on Aug 10 ... as of Aug 14 tracking shows "In Transit, Arriving Late" ... with no further updates as to when it might arrive.

Bang up job our new Postmaster General is doing ...

Postman delivered my order (above) today, the 17th, seven days after they picked it up.

It was shipped "3 Day Priority Mail" ...

Told him that we appreciated all the postal workers service and that I hoped they get the funding they need.

He thanked me and then said "Yeah ... it's really bad ... you have no idea ..."

That letter went to the distribution center for your state which is in Scarborough. All mail goes there for sortation, even if it's going across the street.

A good clerk can sort 800 to 1000 letters an hour The mail processing machinery processes 30,000 to 35,000 pieces an hour. The transportation is already in place so moving the sortation to the distribution centers was a matter of economies of scale.
