Security & Theft Master keys

Long time ago (1950's) a smart mechanic told me an easy trick to prevent theft. Wire the cigarette lighter as a switch to the ignition, push in the lighter to ground out the coil - won't start till lighter pulled out. Yes you have to remove the 12V wire from the lighter first then wire it in for use as a switch only. Something like this wired to whatever (start circuit) to prevent theft.

Oh my, I too remember the 50's!! That would be a neat theft deterrent.

My insurance agent tried to talk me into putting in a camera in my pole barn, when I bought insurance for my new tractor. I think the insurance company should spring for the camera.
I would like to get a second spare for my tractor. Wondered if you could get them on the net? I could not find any that specifically said for MX5400 Kubota.
I guess I could go to the dealer.

I'm sorry, but that Agent is just buying into the TOTAL BS that Cameras are the solution to all crime. So now the insurance company has some video of someone stealing your tractor. . . . crickets.

Had a guy I met once call me this week about wanting cameras, as he is doing a wood deal with a guy, people told him he should watch.

I told him to not get involved with BAD PEOPLE!

Right you are.My pole barn was robbed about 7 years ago. I helped catch the guys who did it eventually or at least the guy who scoped the job out. He turned on the others and the police caught them about 6 months later. It did no good for my insurance company, I got nothing back that was stolen and the insurance company gave me a check for part of the stuff stolen.
I did not have my other tractor in the there when it was robbed.
With partial suspended sentence the two guys are out now...probably eying my new tractor and they probably have an ignition key that works.

Oh Dear ! I'm not fully up on your insurance situation and none of us out here can be. But I will offer these comments:

1) The Homeowners Ins on the property where your pole barn is SHOULD cover the tractor inside it and any full-up insurance company can/would offer you ability to increase the coverage for "contents" if that is needed. I do not see why you needed separate insurance on the tractor to start with. None of my business of course. You have to use your judgement.
2) The camera is irrelevant as others mentioned. Nobody should spring for any cameras.
3) I own security cameras and recording systems for my home. There is NO SUCH THING as ones tailored to farm tractors nor to any sort of similar machines or cars, etc. Good grief. There are many, many brands and models for sale all over the place. Walmart sells them. Target sells them. Lowes sell them. BJ's sells them. They are for sale in 20 different varieties on Amazon dot com and on the web under the various brand names. Lorex is one. There are wireless types if you have a home nearby to host a security monitor TV, recorder, etc. There are also wired systems that require cables to/from the cameras.
Not that you have any need for them.

Don't be duped into something you don't need. AND by the way, I don't know how long you have had insurance with that agent or what your relationship is but unless you have half a lifetime of history with them you need to get a better agent and a better company. Same company who holds the Homeowners Insurance on the property ?

JWR, yeah, I checked on using just the homeowner insurance. The agent I use for that is also insuring my tractor. If you get the loan for the tractor thru Kubota, you have to have a special tractor insurance. My agent has insured Kubotas before. This insurance covers wrecking the tractor and theft for complete replacement. It was not high priced.

Well, I am glad to hear it isn't costing you a bundle. The mortgage/loan company leaves you no choice. So pay the inexpensive insurance and ignore the camera business is my recommendation.

Again, we out here can only imagine and not really know your circumstance. Being in a high crime area where equipment is at risk is something I have never experienced and hope I never do (!) If you live a few hundred feet from the pole barn maybe there really is a good role for a surveillance camera system. Or if you have internet services at the property (a big IF!) you can get surveillance equipment installed that you can then watch from home miles away. The simplest example these days is the Doorbell Camera with both voice and video coverage of the front door area piped in to your computer and/or TV monitor. If you have a computer savvy family member or reliable installer nearby they can probably help you out big time.

Good luck with it.

Heck a stick shift is the best theft deterrent now a days. No one under 40 can drive the vehicle in North America. Not true for other areas though.

Untill several years ago that wouldn't have worked for me, none of my stuff would start without a cigarette going so the lighters always worked :p

Yes me too - in the 60" I smoked like a chimney and needed the lighter. This trick takes a wire connected to the post that the removed 12V used so it will ground out the added wire when the lighter pushed in. Could have it provide ground to the starter circuit or spark circuit. Tractor would work only if the lighter pushed in.

Are you talking about a second spare key? Go to Messick's (Messicks | Your home for New Holland, Case IH, Kubota & More...) and they can fit you right up. That's where I got my spare for my Kubota.

Most new heavy equipment is going to a code. In the past our shop used to put hidden switch on equipment that only the owner knew where. Not sure it helped. We have had equipment driven into lakes and more than one put in a hole and covered. If they want it they will get it. Mine is off the road, out of site and behind locked gates. Also, lake large dog that barks and a gun that bites.

A few years back a co-worker aged 42 and i jumped into a strange to both of us vehicle. He got out of the drivers seat and asked me to drive "this thing" because he never learned how to drive a stick. It was some sort of substitute for one of our company cars. Of course I learned on a stick so no problem, but the number of people that can drive a stick here in the US is shrinking. I don't think it is that way in Europe though as I see over there even police cars have sticks, and many are diesel powered.

My Case backhoe has a real key (looks like an older GM version). Not that it matters as unlike a car that locks the steering wheel and (on newer cars) communicates with the computer the key is just a switch on equipment and anyone with just basic knowledge could bypass it. The real security is the hood and fuel door can have a padlock on it. Simply disconnecting the battery each night and locking the hood would deter most thieves. Even that could be defeated nowadays with a cordless sawzall.
