I have 2 cases of Phillips X/C 20W-50 aviation oil (I sold my twin Comanche many years ago)
My new SCAG 21HP Kawasaki FR651V powered mower calls for 20W-50 motor oil to be used in the transmission.
I am wondering if I can use the 20W-50 Phillips aviation engine oil in both the Kawasaki FR651V engine and the SCAG transmission.
The Kawasaki manual "recommends" API: SF,SG,SH,SJ, or SL for engine oil.
The Phillips X/C oil shows NO API ratings on the quart containers, but...... Phillips aviation oil is very high quality, probably higher quality than most dino oils.
I have my own opinion, but I would appreciate some factual information.

The Phillips oil should be great stuff to use in those applications.

So it's a new machine and you are going to put in an oil that does not meet the API ratings required by the manufacturer. Sounds like an out for the manufacturer to deny any future warranty claims.

Your "required" terminology is different than the recommended term used by the manufacturer.
The word "recommended" is to me, different than the word "required". The ratings given by the manufacturer are described as "recommended"!
It would be my assumption that an aviation reciprocating engine oil would very likely exceed lawn mower engine requirements.
But......I would like to KNOW more.

That oil should be fine in the engine and transmission, but in my Ferris with Hydro gear pumps and Parker Wheel motors it calls for 15-50 full synthetic so I use Mobil 1.

You only change the 2+- quarts of hydro oil every 300 hours - about every 9 years in typical residential use, so I would go with the Scag or the hydro pump manufacturer oil recommendation, as they are expensive parts to replace.

Hydro oil is 5qts., and is changed at 120 hours, and then at 400 hours.
Engine oil is 2.1 qts and is changed at 8 hours, and then each 100 hours thereafter.
It is not that I want to save $, but rather to find a suitable use for the oil.
I have been storing those 24 qts. of aviation engine oil for 30 years!

SCAG does not suggest synthetic over dino for the hydros.
Just 20W-50 oil,.... but it is the Kawasaki engine oil I am inquiring about.
The bottom line here, may be that any quality brand name engine oil will be just fine in both the hydros, and the engine.
