Not to the degree that one would think the mass hysteria or destruction of an economy is warranted. Any more then doing it for the seasonal flu bug. My opinion abd thankfully I don't need a thousand words to say that.

Yes. If a face covering will stop droplets from an asymptomatic spreader in the hospital. It will also stop droplets from an asymptomatic spreader outside a hospital. The physics by which the mask accomplishes this does not vary by geographic location.

I was referring to the quality of the masks not the location...generally health care personnel do not wear homemade cloth masks...

Take the example Notre Dame is having right now. They required all students to take covid tests before arriving on campus. 33 out of 12,000 came back positive. Something like 0.03%. Anyone that tested negative was allowed back on campus. A week later 300 students had positive test results. Most of them traced back to 1 off-campus party. Someone spread it.

No, they just wear them for a short time and throw them in the garbage.

I think if you tested many people for many things in our society, there would be a lot of surprises.

So your conclusion is that the cloth masks mostly worn by the public are as effective as those worn in "health care settings"...?

Nobody ever said that, or meant to make that claim.!! A Mask is better than no mask to minimize spreading C-19, flu, etc.

That's all the mask wearers are saying, ... until someone goes all nit-picky semantic looking for a squabble. Then they're often baited to support what someone else said, and often just for theater.

Neither a mask or a lottery ticket is a 'sure thing' so can we skip looking for absolutes for a while? The pandemic is far from over.

I think there are no spreaders out there, any more than there were Terrorists behind every bush, post 911. BUT, we did loose many of our rights.

I've told this story before several times... I'll tell it again. My first-hand experience with how fast one person can infect others unknowingly with a virus...

The night after my father's funeral home viewing, I got dizzy, started throwing up, curled up in the fetal position, my hands cramped closed and my legs locked up. I had tunnel vision and asked my wife to call an ambulance. Spent the night and morning in the hospital getting fluids and couldn't attend my own father's burial. At the church service, they had to get a different priest, because the main priest got violently ill. At the church, my brother-in law keeled over. His wife (my sister) keeled over at the cemetery. Several of my relatives left the funeral home the night before and got violently ill back home in Wisconsin. Another of my sisters keeled over after the burial. One of my cousins was a tough guy from the Navy. He didn't go to the Dr. for 3 days after the funeral. He went into renal failure and lost his kidney function. Had to get a transplant from his sister.

The culprit? Norovirus. Everyone crying, hugging, kissing, shaking hands spread it around. 8-9 of us needed hospitalization. Crap like that spreads fast. So, I have a pretty good first-hand experience with how fast poop can hit the fan.

I'm pretty convinced that people have illnesses, don't know it (or those that feel sick, but go to work anyway), and spread it around. No bad intentions, but it happens. Since we know that it can be spread from water vapor leaving your mouth and nose, and we know people spread it that are asymptomatic, why can't we all just agree to wear a mask when around other people, and stop being so self-centered/self-conscious?

...A Mask is better than no mask to minimize spreading C-19, flu, etc....
Not necessarily so...
Some studies show that mask wearers are more prone to touching their faces...if a mask is collecting/stopping virus infected droplets...what is to keep those virus microbes from being transferred to the hands and then to the eyes, nose or mouth ??

Speculation is that if C-19 virus microbes are close enough to be stopped by a mask they are in the same proximity to the eyes, hands etc...

Now that we are down to stating opinions.

I doubt very much that wearing a cloth mask will help prevent the wearer from covid-19
I do believe that wearing a cloth mask may help a LITTLE in preventing spreading of Covid thru large droplets.
But I still think many droplets are expelled both thru and around the cloth mask..
I believe the main benefit of wearing a cloth mask is mostly to make people feel better. Symbolism over substance. BUT, I don't really see any harm in wearing one, and it MAY do some good of keeping spit out of the air or onto other people, so we will wear our mask's for the time being anyway.

I also think equating all masks including N95 with something home made and poorly fitted is just silly. Some are going to do a much better job than others. and MAY have a much greater benefit.

SO, there you have it. MY opinion. And that is all it is.

How about weakening your immune system? No harm in that? I'm not saying there is or isn't. An opinion is all I have or will probably ever have on this subject and many more.
