People like that don't buy their own groceries, let alone weld anything. Everything they need done is done by hired lackies.

Good friends of mine worked on the landscaping. The owner is a farmer. Apparently he felt the contractors wanted too much for the granite pavers for the driveways so he bought the pavers and did it all himself.

Yeah, I got the impression he built this a) because he could and b) because he thought he could make a buck when he was done. Sounds like he's already planning his next build and its multi family housing or similar.

There are a few of the wealthy that are hands on. Someone like Jay Leno comes to mind. Not saying they don't or won't have help, a spread like that and it would be almost impossible to keep up unless you were the Duggars with 20 kids (or is it 21? Lost track!)

I get the same impression. I don't know anything about the builder except except the paver story that was told to me.

The shop, and welder plug is possibly for maintenance people.

I have customers with lots of money, they have all kinds of tools, and equipment they don't actually use.

Lots of people own airplanes, and don't know how to fly them.

At 11 million dollars he/she is probably not a welder or least the type of welder I'm thinking of.

If you can afford to live there, why would you even need a welder? The car lift probably isnt for working on cars, its probably just for storage, so a car can be raised and one parked under it. If I owned that though, I wouldnt want to do any type of welding/burning in there anyway. WAY too nice for the mess it would make.

I like the assumption that anyone that's "rich" doesn't enjoy trucks, tractors, building their own stuff, etc. Most of the "rich" people I know are the exact opposite.

There is no assumption about what wealthy people like or not. Just saying they probably have a caretaker who stocks the fridge and has fresh flowers on the table when they arrive from wherever. Personal shoppers, landscapers, etc. Sure anyone with a boatload of money can still do whatever themselves, BUT most don't have the time to do so. And even if they did, in most cases can find something more valuable to do with their time. Wealth is a different ballgame than rich; those with wealth have the actual chopper, Lear jet, vs. just the pad to land it on.
Trucks, tractors, expensive cars are merely toys, who said anything about anyone liking them. So the guy did his own pavers, maybe in addition to being 'rich' he's also too cheap to pay high prices for certain things he figures he can get and do for less money.
Nothing wrong with being frugal; it's how some get to be rich.

BTW, shacks on Nantucket Island, MA, start at $10+ million, so an $11 million 43 acre place is not that big a deal in perspective to REAL overpriced real estate. :confused3:

Heck, I'd build $10.8 million shop/barn and a $200,000 house. Still spend the same money.

The "$10.8 million shop/barn and a $200,000 house" would likely not be possible on Nantucket.
The island has very strict building restrictions.
