Our first house was probably the best money I (we) ever spent, because it taught me some life lessons on finance, debt, repayment, budgeting, planning, responsibility, home repairs, landscaping, learning to live with close and very diverse neighbors, let alone learning to do all of that with a new wife.
While I hold my machine in high regard in the money well spent category, I usually weigh the pro's and con's of almost all purchases and rationalize out if it's worth spending the money on or not. I mean, heck, I was pouring concrete with my kid and her fiancé last week and looked at the shovel he was using. It's the first shovel I ever bought with my own money after we got married. I told him about it with a little pride and reminiscing since he's gonna be getting married and may have to purchase his own shovel some day. Brought back some 'young man' thoughts to my head. Got all sentimental about a shovel. And then I remembered I also have a shovel that my dad had when I was a kid. Both purchases seem to be money well spent.
