George Carlin said “everyone driving slower than me is an idiot and everyone driving faster is a maniac”. I think most people feel that way.

To the OP I don’t think most people are driving slow just to enforce their speed limit. In most cases that is how they drive.

George Carlin was a wise man. Some of the things he said were pretty profound. If he hadn't been a comedian he could have been a decent philosopher.

IMO G. Carlin was not all that funny...he had a few witty bits but a lot of his shtick made people laugh simply because it "sounded funny"...like little kids laughing when someone says "fart" etc...

Something that always irked me was how often he (Carlin) was on 'The Tonight Show' with Johnny Carson...he was a known avid drug user...but a guy like Cheech Marin who actually has a genius IQ and never smoked weed (ever)...was never a guest merely because of his comedy routines as Cheech & Chong...!

Our county road has a speed limit of 45. I drive 45. There are sure a lot of yahoos who can't read the speed signs and drive 65 and more. Fortunately, there are plenty of places to pass me. And they do.

In the winter time they still go the same speed. Many end up in the ditch. I just wonder if they got where they wanted to be and in time.

In all the safety manuals, courses, etc they stress sthat the safest speed to drive is whatever the traffic is doing. To drive 60 because that is the limit is "not smart" if the prevailing speed is 65. Anything less and you are a 'moving road block'. In my logn life I have have drien coast to coast many times, driven in 49 of the 50 states and the prevailing speed all over is usuallyi over the speed limit by 3-5 mph on the open road.

You just hit on a peeve of mine. CC has improved over time but still doesn't always maintain a steady speed. There's nothing more frustrating than getting behind someone who slows w-a-y down on a hill, then the car finally downshifts and they're off like a shot... usually just as you pull out to pass them. Furthermore if you need it to maintain a steady speed you aren't paying enough attention to your driving; when I'm behind somebody I often shut it off when it's the only way to maintain a safe distance behind them.

I still can have a bit of a heavy foot, yet slow down in built up areas or places where there's apt to be traffic entering, or kids, pedestrians and animals on the side of the road. Often the people I just passed will then go blowing by me with no regard for reduced speed limits or possible hazards in the road.
One time I had to get home in a hurry, and was going way too fast with 3 cars right behind me. When I slowed down through town, all 3 went by me with no regard for the crossroad, crosswalk, or school zone.

I have had old cars and new cars with CC since it came out. The early ones may have acted that way but all others haven't varied by 1mph up hill. Down hill they tend to gain speed though.

Carlin was born in 1937 and became a comedian in 1956. He died 12 years ago at the age of 71. How old are you, that George Carlin's pottymouth is a sign of the times?When were these good ol days? I'm starting to see a trend here. Nothing is country enough, or old enough, nothing meet your standards. Are you offended by something here? Or are you trying to be offensive?

Cheech Marin says he never smoked pot while working on the films, not that he never smoked weed ever. :laughing:

I have had old cars and new cars with CC since it came out. The early ones may have acted that way but all others haven't varied by 1mph up hill. Down hill they tend to gain speed though.

Our 2000 Impala with a 4sp automatic would maintain within 1mph up hill no problem. It would accelerate on steep downgrades.

Our 2013 Impala with a 6sp automatic will loose up to 3mph before kicking down a couple gears to get back to the set speed. It will, however, hold speed in a steep downgrade pretty well. So in hilly areas, I'll just pump the accelerator at the base of a hill and it'll kick down and then hold speed up the hill. It's kind of a pain, but workable.

I use CC on open limited access highways ONLY. Never anywhere else. Most roads I drive are too rural to use it, the rest are in small cities.

One thing that always annoyed me was leapfrogging semis. I'm on CC and maintaining speed within 5MPH while they slow and drop a gear or six climbing hills then fly downhill. I can recall passing and being passed by the same truck a dozen times over 15 or 20 miles. Got so I'd watch for it coming up behind me and move left so it didn't have to.
