Reminds me of that report of the Grandfather dying peacefully in his sleep. Unlike the other people in his car, screaming and shouting.

Test after test by the experts show that studded tires are better than good snow tires in ONE AND ONLY ONE situation - glare ice. The day of studs is coming to an end, we already have to pay an extra fee for them. My suds have been in the shed for 30 years or more, I'll take good 'all weather tires" and reasonable driving any day.

I certainly disagree with those "experts" glare ice and hard packed wet snow which is quite common around here.
I will guarantee that so called all season (or as I call them summer tires) will not get you up and down some of the town roads around here during a storm,
a few hours after the storm has ended and the highway crews have done their job, yep you can get around.
Also my driveway is a steep 1/4 mile that 2wd and summer tires will not make many days in the winter.
I run studded tires every winter, my wifes Jeep we tried the studless snows last year and they did adequate most times not every time and last winter was especially mild and no ice storms.

I will agree that studs reduce your traction on dry roads, but I don't need optimum traction in those conditions. "Experts" also say that you should stay home until the roads are cleared after a storm, yet who can afford to do that?

Off in a different direction; how many people heed the stop lines at intersections? I thought of this today as I was trying to make a right hand turn, and see past the guy in the other lane who had pulled forward past the stop line and over the crosswalk... and then got POed at me when I crept forward so that I could see beyond him. (The northbound lane he was going into had traffic, the one I was turning into was clear.)

Every time this subject comes up (and I'm not saying you), someone drops in and gives the old "4wd doesn't help you stop" advice. They are incorrect, and here's why...

Those vehicles don't have ABS. (The lucky dogs.) Otherwise they would have looked like the guy in the FedEx commercial, sliding out of sight.

Well, the thing about ABS is in a non-ABS vehicle, once your wheels lock up, you cannot turn. You're going in one direction, and that's it. An advantage to ABS is that you can still turn, because the wheels aren't completely locked up.

My point was that the video doesn't apply to most vehicles sold since 1995. I understand what you are saying though... as I pointed out previously, ABS on snow can prevent you from stopping yet does give you the ability to decide what you want to hit. :D

Years ago I did an experiment in front of my house in about 8" of snow, before the road was plowed. I took my 1998 GMC extended cab Sierra, which I had disabled the ABS; got up to 45 mph and used the brakes to stop. I then did the same with my then-new 2005 F150 company truck... it took 1 1/2 times the distance to stop from the same speed, on the same stretch of road.

Raises hand. When it snows, I don't go.

I don't even shovel the driveway sometimes. I just let it melt in a day or three.

My take on ABS.
I can't, you try and then all try they all quit.
I still prefer to pump w/o ABS.
I once relied on ABS and hit a pole.
No, not ever again!
