Do you enjoy your job?

By the end of the 60's I'd become a Chef for the Marriott Corp. & travelled the country as part of a Task Force opening Corp. Hotels.
Moved to the "Front of the House" in the early 70s but found there were FAR to many customers that REALLY needed to be told about themselves.
Spent 25 yrs in Food Warehousing while rearing 8 kids.
Finished my working career as a State Corrections Officer for 10 yrs. {6 on Death Row, it's a long story}
As a nation, I'm afraid, we've lost the ability to be ashamed of ourselves.

Retired, I work harder and for longer hours than I've ever done in my life. Only now it's because I love it so.
The Mrs. & I own and operate an Equine Boarding Facility in Florida.
Who'da thunk it? Pulled out of college by the draft board for Vietnam and end up here.
Yeah, God is good but that's another story.

LOL, that's what my kids keep telling me.
I just call it living life to it's fullest.
I find many other lives posted here SO much more interesting than mine.

My neighbor was VE2 MD and he was a doctor. Nice chap.

As a youth all things mechanical and ham radio were my interests.

As luck would have it I was fortunate to end up in aviation which actually started as a hobby that turned into full time occupation.
As a hobby my employers (I was an art supply sales rep back then) allowed me to use my personal aircraft on business travel and that worked out extremely well for all.


That led to part time hobby which in turn went full time.
As time progressed I ended up as an FBO that specialized in avionic installations and eventually owned my own hanger.
Our specialty sort of became preparing single AC for transatlantic ferry flights and we did a fair number over time.
At one point we actually manufactured HF SSB panel mounted units and were successful at that.

Never a dull moment and always a new challenge to meet.
The industry was real good to me.
We were a full line avionics shop/ FBO and eventually a Cessna dealer.
I even became a director of the AEA and sat for quite a few years.

Never regretted my choices.
Down side was dealing with DOT/FAA types (not all mind U) and the constant revisions of procedures that could change from day to day.

Oh, and I do miss boring holes in the sky! and the aroma of avgas.

I could have worked for you.

I worked at an FBO part time right after high school in a small town just to the north of us. The owner was the father of a classmate. Things started going south there, so I got a job at the FBO here at the local airport in South Bend. The owner of that FBO lived across the street from me and his son was my best friend for my first 20 years of life. I really enjoyed that job. Started as groundskeeper/hangar maintenance keeping the area neat and clean, painting T-hangars (we had 90 of them), repairing door hardware, etc..., and refueling aircraft. Soon moved up to full time working on the line. 3 or so years into it I was the line foreman, hiring, training, scheduling charter flights, ordering fuel for the farm, etc... had a crew of about 8 linemen and 1 mechanic that took care of all of our ground equipment. My favorite time of year was Notre Dame football season. We'd get a couple hundred planes in each weekend. Talk about a madhouse. :laughing:

There were 3 partner owners: 1 - an aircraft mechanic that ran the repair shop. 2 - an avionics man that had his own shop but bought into the FBO. And 3 - a jerk that had a lot of money. Unfortunately, #3 was my direct boss. :laughing:

Anyhow, it was a great job and I would have stayed there for life had they followed through with the promise of benefits after 5 years. By year 6 I knew that wasn't going to happen, was married, and wanted to start a family, had just finished 2 associate degrees in electronics at the local community college, so I quit and got a job at the local newspaper.

Yes.....if a cockpit with conventional yoke controls.
Not so sure....if a sidestick controller type, such as the aircraft built by AirBus.

A guy I coach football with was a military pilot. He trained other guys how to fly in T38s. I asked him if he was on a commercial airliner and both pilots keeled over, could he fly and land it and he said yes!
