Old path, what does that mean, washes out? Chipping off slag?

I'm not very good at explaining things, I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you make a T shape joint with something like 1/8 plate, put a 1/4 gap in the joint, the 6011 will fill the gap better/easier then 7014. So lots of times if I want a nice looking weld I fill gap with 6011 then dress weld with 7014, but on a tight joint I like 7014, less spatter with a clean weld.

I have a stupid story. Last week I was welding on a small repair with 1/8 10018, while welding with a 35 year old Miller Dialarc and after a couple rods I noticed that the rods was starting harder then usual and I had to keep a tight arc to weld. Then the next day I did another repair but turned heat up a bit but still the rods didn't run good so after a dozen rods and aggravation setting in and thinking is something wrong with the rods or my $300.00 welder or have I really lost my touch, then like Thomas Edison the light came on................

IF this is another explanation of "how to keep a turkey in suspense", it's WORKING... ... Steve

What did the light say? :D

Guys, success! So trial and error doing thin metal, 16 gauge.

7014 did great on 45 amps, that's the sweet spot on something that thin, me doing it at least. I tried 40 first, then bumped it up to 60. It would burn through, so I worked it down a few times down to 45.

I also tried switching leads to negative polarity for 3/32" 6011, didn't have much luck with that. I could get better with that rod if I work at it. There's a lot of stuff I need to improve on, but at least I know what that is. I love welding with stick though, so much! Really fun.

I've said it here before, if there was more time in school spent on hands on things- especially welding- there would be a lot fewer troubled teens out there. Never mind the satisfaction of making something yourself, there's just something about striking an arc and drawing a good bead. And I"m not even a good welder...

I'm also waiting to see what that light bulb was. The last time that I had something happen like what OP describes it turns out that I was trying to burn 1/8 inch rods with my little AC Tombstone... thinking they were 1/16.

It would also do wonders for attention span. Having taught in High School college courses in welding, I can say though that may be a lost cause. Need to get them early. Start in middle school with basic shop classes to show them what their hands can do when put to good use.

This turkey is thinking he's welding using SP instead of RP.

Now I will look at the sky and drown in the rain...

You seem to know something, but choose to write like a dervish instead. It's too bad that you don't care to share what you know, because some of us could benefit from it.

Got a strong hunch you don't know jack bout Dervishes. Sure no doubt you could use lot of educating too.
Maybe best you scoot back to Remedial where you assigned. No dang wonder why your momma had so much trouble gettin you out of diapers.
