I wonder where that was it looked like a standard US pickup being used.
They may need a baler, and she certainly was a hard working gal.
It certainly isn't the most efficient way to handle hay as that whole big pile on that pickup wasn't even a half dozen small square bales,
it wouldn't go a long ways toward feeding in the winter.
Plus, they still have to get it home and unloaded and restacked.

That's how Dad and I got it up, exactly except I'd give anything to have had a pretty helper like that!
We then pitch forked it into his horse barn we built, a stall with wooden floor.

For smaller operations, it’s not unimaginable to see someone collect loose hay like that. They could be on a shoestring budget and lost their baler or tractor and can’t afford to replace or needed to get hay scooped up before rain.

This video (X2) shows the entire process of cutting, raking, drying, stacking on racks with no machines. This reminds me of days gone by when clocks ran a different speed.

To me it proves what I've thought for years, one doesn't have to belong to a gym but working is the best exercise! I believe people years ago were stronger and more fit.
You see very few young people today working like that.

I rake my leaves in a similar fashion. I windrow them, then turn the rake over and push the windrows down to the end. It slides real easy when it's upside down.

We have a few hobby farms around us like this. It's more of a getting back to basics and living with nature culture that avoids machinery and chemical use where possible. In direct contrast to my Amish neighbors that use horse drawn equipment and use some pesticides. One neighbor pulls an old Wisconsin gas motor baler with horses.

When I was young we put in loose hay, but we used a tractor with a buck rake to gather and a trip rake to pile it. Barn still has the hay forks.
