West Coast Smoke, UGH!

Well. you can add me to the 'club'!
A bushfire has sprung up (after a fuel reduction burn on Tuesday) due to 50kph+ gusting winds.
Wind direction should keep the fire to the other side of my road.
House is prepped, generator fuelled and fire hose 'run out' just in case.
I'm dressed in my Navy camouflage & boots (with anti-flash hood/gloves) as it's designed for fire fighting if I have to.

Bummer. I hope you stay safe.

Ta Mate.

It's been a long day but it looks like the immediate danger is over. The Fire Services + 3 water-bomber helicopters were quick to respond. Many were evacuated but I and other neighbours chose to stay and defend as the wind direction looked to be in our favour. I only had to handle a spot-fire at the bottom of my driveway which didn't take hold enough to destroy any gates. Mind you, it took connecting every one of my hoses to reach the area.

Fortunately, the winds have, eventually, abated and the extra burn stopped at the edge of the adjacent State Forest... an area that I'd been 'eying', nervously, ever since I moved here. So that's a great result. No homes/sheds have been reported lost.

Crews are patrolling and mopping up now. The majority of the smoke is 'white' and there's not much of a 'glow' in the night sky. I'll still have a late night/morning doing periodic patrols of the property.

May the winds continue to be favorable...

We're not out of this yet.

Santa Rosa Fire Department

A Red Flag Warning is in effect beginning today at 4 p.m. (Saturday, 10/3) until 6 am Sunday (10/4) for dry conditions and gusty winds above 1000 feet.

* AFFECTED AREA: North Bay mountains above 1000 feet.

* WIND: Northwest 10 to 25 mph with gusts 25 to 35 mph.

* HUMIDITY: 15 to 25 percent but locally 8-12 percent with little or no nighttime recovery in the hills.

* HIGHEST THREAT: Active portions of the Glass Fire or those areas with unsecured or open fire line.

* IMPACTS: Fire will spread rapidly due to the combination of hot temperatures, very dry fuels, breezy northerly winds and low humidity.

A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions ... strong winds low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

It's been smoke free for a little over a week here. I surely do count our weather as a blessing.
