Lately my M59 has seemed sluggish even in high range and HST high. I noticed it most when shuttling big bales between my Aunt's barn next door to my animals at home, a total distance of about .25 miles, half of which is smooth, level asphalt. Today I switched the speed display on, throttled to 2000 rpm and gave it full pedal, reaching only 6.3 mph. I stopped and backed up at full reverse pedal, no other changes, and rocketed backwards at 12.0 mph.

Has anyone else experienced this and where do I start diagnosis?

I would first look at the hydro pedal linkage under the tractor. Look at the rods with adjustable ends on them. Are any of the jam nuts loose that would change the pedal adjustment?

definitely a hydro linkage situation. When my little tractor does this, often I look down and find sticks jammed into the pedal assembly or underneath in the linkages.

The only linkage appears to go to the creeper control. I think this has an electronic pedal position switch that tells the hst how much and which way. The creeper control lever has rods that move the pedal, not the other way around.

Oh, rats. Electrical issue then? Hopefully not any internal hydro trans problems....

There is probably a procedure in the workshop manual to test out the pedal. Id assume there is a proper resistance range for forward & back. Possibly a calibration function for the pedal itself or the computer.

Ours is a 2007 or 2008 M59 too. One of the first.

Beneath the floorboard there is a stranded control wire - very much like a bicycle/motorcycle cable - that runs from beneath your HST pedal rearwards to wrap around a spring-loaded drum about foot to the rear. That cable is sealed so that no dirt can get in and should last forever....but it doesn't. I replaced mine a few years back and posted here... I'll try to find that old posting so we can get the part number.

Anyway what you are feeling with yours sure sounds like what mine did right before the cable broke. Basically a few of the strands had parted so that the cable wasn't winding around the spring-loaded drum equally in fwd and reverse. Kind of hard to explain, but I bet if you lay under that side you can see the control wire. Then it makes sense.

It is hard to access, but you can do it with strong fingers and only a few tools. Be careful to run the new cable exactly like the old one. It took me about an hour of futzing to take the old one off and replace it. And then another 30 minutes to convince myself that it was really fixed... it was...

I just checked, the post was:

Not knowing how many needed replacing, and since Messick's shipping is expensive, I ordered all 3 cables from Messick's, I believe the one that got used was the KU 32791 - 44730 It was about $30.00
I also bought a 32791-44750 and a 32791-54790 cable, but they were fine & now live in my spares box.

The HST peddle is drive by wire. You should consider getting the WSM as the HST diagnostic section is too long to post here.

Ask Messick's to ship USPS if the ordered item is not too big.
They automatically ship everything UPS...unless you ASK for USPS, which is usually MUCH cheaper.
