Hi Folks,

Does anyone know if Tractors have a sensor for when the tractor is tilted forward or backward with a hydrostatic transmission? When I letoff the pedal going down hill, it wants to push me back up hill, not just hold my position. It doesn't matter which way I'm facing down a hill as far as leaning forward or backwards, it always wants to push the tractor in the opposite direction and even pressing the brake doesn't hold it, it fights me all the way. Even trying to scoop dirt it wants to fight me when I left off the pedal on any slight terrain.

I have tried adjusting the cam on the pedals to see if it would better stop in neutral but it doesn't want to.

Could this be the swash plate or some sort of sensor?

If you're talking about the Branson 4720, then no. You have a full mechanical engine and transmission. No electronics acting on those ends.

It might be some sort of adjustment needed. Hopefully someone with more experience on HST can help you out on this.

Thank you. The only thing I know is the cam at the pedals, and nothing seems to make it behave right. I can see it change behaviors.. but it never stops fighting me trying to stop or getting it in neutral.

Your 4720ch doesn't seem to work at all like my 4720ch. When I let off my hydrostatic pedal, uphill or down hill, the pedal stays put, and slowly, very slowly, comes back to neutral (it comes back more slowly in the higher ranges than the lower ranges). In fact I often lightly press the opposite direction pedal very slightly to make it slow down faster. However if I am using the cruise control and am buzzing along at high speed and turn the cruise control off, the pedal flies back to neutral and the tractor will stop so fast it nearly throws me through the windshield. So I have trained myself to keep my foot on the hydrostatic pedal if I disengage the cruise control. It has been all a matter of getting used to it.
Also when taking off (particularly in high range) if you just unattentively mash the hydrostatic pedal down (like most people do), it lurches forward like a son of a gun. You have to push the pedal lightly. None of this is a problem for me anymore as I know my tractor and have adjusted, but if someone else gets on it they sure notice the hydrostatics' idiosyncrasies.
Yours must need some sort of adjustment. Mine probably needs it in the opposite way.

Hey Cougsfan, thanks for the reply, it's good to know how others same models are behaving. I had the issue you described with the pedal not returning quickly when I first got the tractor, I did some looking underneath and noticed there's not grease zerk for the pedals, so once in a while I just have to spray WD40 or PB blaster underneath where the pedals move and that frees them back up to return quicker. There's also a tension bolt that can tighten then return spring that can help. Unfortunately none of those things help with my tractor randomly picking which direction it wants to go from returning to neutral heh.

I know this is old now, but I felt like I should share since i just got it resolved. The dealer had a hell of a time figuring it out, and the Branson Service advisor was able to guide them. It turns out that there's some sort of plunger in the Hydrostatic unit that failed, their solution was to replace the entire Hydrostatic unit. It now behaves like I would expect where returning to neutral on an incline has very little if not no movement. The high gear also accelerates properly now.

Thanks to all who shared their input and I hope no one else has to deal with it.

Thanks for the follow up explaining the resolution of the problem.

Hi ceaster, Like Smokeydog says...Thanks for coming back to explain the cause and resolution of the problem!! Often, people will state their problems but never come back with a finished solution after they get that problem fixed. I find that annoying; even if it's not my brand of tractor I still like to hear and know what the problem solution was. Sometimes that solution can be applied to a different situation or just added to the sack of knowledge we tinker'ers carry around. Thanks again.
