"One political faction's ideal world would be a place where everybody has guaranteed employment, free comprehensive healthcare, free education, free food, free housing, free clothing, free utilities, and only law enforcement has guns. And believe it or not, such a place does indeed already exist: It's called Prison."
~Sheriff Joe Arpaio~

Joe was in office when I lived in Phoenix. He used to boast that he could feed and house prisoners cheaper than the pound keeps dogs.

I'm not sure if that's a good thing, or not?

I guess that it depends on whether you view inmates as humans.

I can't remember if I said this one already but I first heard it in the 50s when I was a kid and we were visiting our relatives in the Ozarks. The roads were very poor then and most creeks had low water crossings instead of bridges.

So when someone would say something like "see you in church on Sunday", the typical answer was "the good Lord willing and the creeks don't rise".

^^^^^I've heard that saying many times, but until now never really knew what it meant.

^^^^^I've heard that saying many times, but until now never really knew what it meant.

For most of my life, we've had a creek that crosses our driveway that is susceptible to flooding, so that saying always made perfect sense to me.

Another one is, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." A young horse has short front teeth that come out perpendicular to the jaw. As the horse gets old, the front teeth get longer, and they are angled towards the front of the mouth.

It would be rude to "look a gift horse in the mouth" to assess its age and value. You should just say, "Thank you for the horse."

Of course, it's an old saying from a time when any horse has value. If nothing else, it could help feed the family over winter.
