Alternative CDI for tractor using Robin DY27 diesel engine

Hi folks,
I was using our ihi mini excavator and started smelling burnt rubber. Sure enough, saw smoke coming out of engine bay. Opened up and saw the CDI (i think that's what it is??) wires melted. The engine is a DY27 diesel engine, and I cannot find the same part anywhere in shops around me. The spare parts store showed me an alternative that he said I can possibly use with some reconfiguration but it only has 4 wires (the one that burnt up had 6 wires).

Is it possible to rig it using just 4 wires (last 2 pics)? Thanks very much in advance for any suggestions/ideas.

hi Agvg, I'm actually not sure what it is called. Is that what it is? A charge regulator? If that's what it is, do you think I can use alternative?

That's what I was thinking as well. Looking a the colors as much as you can tell they seem similar to this:

It was still running when smoke & burning smell came out ... and I quickly stopped the engine & check, that's when I saw the unit was burnt (actually smoke was also coming from the excavator control panel area).

Thanks Mikey, it does look similar. I also found another one that looks almost identical but it says Ford & the wires are different colours. I'm wondering if they are interchangeable? Will the wires do different things on different machines?? :

An alternative is to replace the generator on the engine with a modern type, it would produce a lot more current and be a much better choice, then you don't need that burnt part.

I don't know what you mean exactly. Do you mind giving me an example of a modern type I can replace it with please? I would like to consider that seriously. Thanks!

CDI is usually acronym for Capacity Discharge Ignition........... Basically you have is "Voltage Regulator".....
