Today looks like a good day to go mining for horizontal surfaces in the shop. I am pretty sure that they exist, but it will take some digging to expose them.

That is a unique way to say 'clean up the shop'. I like it.

Good Morning. 43F @ 4:45AM. Sun and clouds mixed. High 61F. Winds light and variable.
The latest 10-day is showing rain only on Friday, until next Tuesday when it starts up again. Fine with me!

If you use an iPhone, Drew, you can get a HomeKit enabled thermostat that will let you turn the furnace on/off and set the temperature using the phone. I like being able to start the heater an hour or so before I have to get out of bed, or turn off the furnace if I forget to before I leave home, or turn on the A/C when I leave town so the house is cool when I get there. A retired person doesn't have regular hours, so a setback thermostat really doesn't fit in with the routine. But being able to control temperature from an iPhone, iPad, or newer MacBook Pro is very nice.

Hope the service goes well, Kyle, with no gremlins creeping in. Hope you all get more rain soon.

Good luck with the tape, Bill. I used some the other day to tuck some wires up under some sheathing outside the house, and am curious to see if it'll remain stuck once it starts raining.

Thought I'd drop by HF while I was in town yesterday and pick up another of those low mover's dollies, but no, the clerk said they had to use them all up for their own merchandise. None at a local tool store, but Tractor Supply had one, for almost twice the price.:muttering: Not much choice as I needed it and the one I already have to park a pallet of fire wood on. The big tractor won't fit in the garage now, so I needed a way to roll the pallet into place, and there's no room to use a pallet jack...

Up too early again, but do need to be on the road by 8AM to avoid riding in the dark on the other end today. It'll be a brisk start with temps down in the valley in the high 30s, but with an electrically heated jacket and handgrips, I'll be fine. Bakersfield and Indian Tandoori is on the menu for tonight.

Rip and Penn, I never got my pilot's license, but my first girlfriend's dad was a retired Lt. Col from the airforce with over 10,000 flight time including F4's. He took me under his wing and started teaching me, first in a small PA120, then he bought a Bellanca Citabria....and we did plenty of aerobatics. You could fly it inverted for a minute, with it's extra oil pump. Tragically, he was killed in it, along with another man (who had a failing business). Augered in. I was almost ready to solo. I have since found out that many Bellanca's have had wooden structural failures. I won't fly in one. Another church friend bought an older Bellanca. But he was getting up near 80 years old. I'm glad he lost his pilot's license before that plane had any problems.

Kyle, I used to be Commander of the Helicopter Section of the police department. The prior commander was promoted to another position and had never been a pilot himself, but I decided to work to get a pilot's license for the helicopters, and just before I was ready to go for a test, the police department changed chiefs and almost immediately had a big shuffling of assistant chiefs, deputy chiefs, captains, and lieutenants, and I became a watch commander in the jail.:laughing: So, like you, I never got a pilot's license.

yes, which is why I replaced it with exactly what was there, hoping something 30+ years newer would keep me in a 2 degree range, not 4. Maybe not...
if this were my house, I'd rip out the oil burner and put in a full hvac system with digital controls.
But for now, decided to stick with something very simple.

in watching the youtube video, looks like wiring is done to base and top just unscrews so I might not need to do any wiring. Reminds me of the base on a smoke detector but with
wiring connections. I'm sure it's a simple two wire system but I'll turn off power anyway.

heavy drizzle out, rain coming in soon. Worked in garage unboxing what I could so garbage men could take the cardboard away in a few hours.
They admitted, as i expected, they just throw all the recycling together with regular trash, blaming it on Covid lack of staff to do sorting. I blame it on "follow the money", since it costs
them money to recycle vs used to be they got paid for their recycle material. Let's see, takes time and costs them more money...no surprise. Somewhat sad the recycling we all need to get done
is just ignored. I wonder if the local supervisors care...

new workbench has 1.5 inch thick solid wood top, unfortunately with a few shipping dings in it. I can fix with some sandpaper, and then add my own...

still waiting on plumbers, they charge 105 dollars an hour including travel time. For two people that seems reasonable, for one it's a bit much.

36°F and clear skies this morning, going up to 55° today.

The storms expected yesterday evening never materialized, at least for us. There was apparently some wind damage north of us, but all we got was just enough rain to make things wet. We only got the tail end of the front that pushed through. Got a few things done inside the house, then settled on the couch downstairs and listened to some relaxing music with one of the cats. My lower back was rather thankful for the respite, not to mention the ridiculously hot shower that followed.

Veterans Day here in the US. Saying thanks hardly ever seems enough.
An old friend of mine who is a retired USMC Master Gunnery Sergeant has been writing some rather long posts on Facebook the last couple of days, recounting his time of service. It is a mixture of riveting combat stories and insightful philosophy as only seen through the eyes of a career warrior. His ridiculous sense of humor makes it all fun reading, though. Today is the one year anniversary of his "retirement," and after a year of still working at The Pentagon and State Department, he's actually talking about going back into The Corp. Our freedoms are resting securely on the broad shoulders of such people. "Thanks" hardly scratches the surface.

One of my wife's relatives was a combat pilot ww1 and II and was pretty famous. I got to ride with his son in the wwII trainer out in California a number of years ago- He passed on, as did my wife's father, a few years back. Some interesting history with her side of the family and aircraft.

Today pack up screen and Halloween decorations. Wife already started with Xmas stuff!

Good morning to all! Low of 25... it got chilly quickly! No precip for this week forecasted. We got a whopping 0.02" of rain over the weekend.... no snow at all. We are continuing to be in an "exceptional" drought condition.

I have not been into the shop for 2 days....a bunch of personal crap / bs going on.... too much to even begin to get into... I guess being the "patriarch" has it's cost....

Today, the dust has settled, at least for a little bit.... I will attempt to get some shop time. I can't remember what day I had to run some errands, but ended up being the whole day... went to Walmart, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, Lowes, Ace hdw., and finally Costco.... got home with a lot less $$$ in the bank account. I can't let the "lists" get that long anymore....

The new shop vac arrived yesterday... this time all the goodies/attachments were in the box. Nice unit, much quieter than anticipated. It will suck the shoe laces right off your boots....

Still trying to get caught up with all the posts...

81 at noon, down to 79 now and cloudy, low was 66, feels like June.
Rain is getting close, can feel it in the air.

We had the key fob issues yesterday, I bought new batteries for Ellen’s Ford Edge, came apart easily, but going back together not so easy.
Finally figured out the hidden key compartment had to be removed, the other two sections snapped together, then snap the key cover on. We were both cussing those things.

My digital thermostat has a backup battery, which makes no sense, if I lose power the HVAC won’t work and the thermostat has a memory chip. So basically I just ignore the battery.

A friend of the family had a Douglas Dauntless dive bomber in the late 60s, I got one ride in that thing, man was it noisy and rough, but heck of a ride for a 15 year old. Seems to me he said it burned about 45 gallons an hour.
I was never a pilot but I got a lot of ride time with friends, not counting commercial flights. Got one flight in a two seat glider, dead opposite of the Douglas, quite and smooth.

69F and partly cloudy @ 16:00, headed down to an overnight low of 37F. Sun peeking through occasionally.

High hit 77F yesterday and we've had record or near-record temps for the last three days.

Just beautiful weather - and I took the last couple of days off (more or less) to just kind of enjoy it ... :thumbsup:

Did get three mums un-potted and planted yesterday in the northeast planting bed though and The Woman got the hibiscus replanted into larger pots. Still need to move those inside. Also did a little garage cleanup as well.

Got last pieces (bottom perch and support) glued and screwed onto the second squirrel feeder last night, need to cut the clear plexiglass front panel for it today and finish applying the BLO to the first one and start/continue on the second one. Also need to put bird bath back up after cleaning it.

Ground hog and squirrels out (cooperatively) grazing around the bird feeders, some birds as well. Imagine the action there will pick up in the next few days as the temps drop.

Will catch up more later.

Good afternoon all.

Low this morning was 62. That’s 10 degrees above average high for this time of year. Low 70’s all day. The rain arrived around 10am. It’s heavy right now.

Got the chimney cleaned this morning before the rain arrived. The rest of the day was a few errands and energy conservation!

As others have said, a simple Thanks to our veterans seems so inadequate. However, I’ve been told by more than a few that they really appreciate the sentiment. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!!

Cooling trend coming in...most of the next 10 days is mid-40's to the mid-30's....
