Sell Gas and Buy Battery Chainsaw?

My battery powered Oregon blower is my goto blower for almost everything. Certainly, not the saw. Self sharpening as it might be, I have barely ever used it. Taken it along on rides, but not used it.

I have two gas saws that I used or should I say use to use... the little Echo which gets only good marks from me and the MS250 for larger work which is mostly in Olympia WA.

When I need a saw around the homestead it is easy to just grab the battery Stihl... a tree blew down across the road... not a big tree... about 14" dia and long.

Neighbor called and said he would meet me at the tree because with both of us working it would go faster... he had never seen my battery Stihl.

Before he could get his gas saw running I had already made two through cuts and had finished on the limbs...

All he could say is wow...

He asked more and then sticker shock set in...

I then explained I went all in so having two batteries and the quick charger meant I was really only paying for the tool...

The reality is I use the blower the most... daily at the "New" place and second would be the extended hedge trimmer... I find a touch up every couple of weeks takes minutes and nothing to clean up vs letting it all grow out... I do have a nice gas trimmer but always needed the ladder to reach...

The pole saw has come in handy too... needed only a few times so far... one was cutting back oak limbs shading the solar panels.

Wish list is a good vac for oak leaves... but it seems vacs are rather limited and gas only...

Now... if I was going off into the woods as I do in Washington... it would be a couple of gallons of gas for sure.

Yes, a battery saw for certain saw tasks like carrying one in the vehicle on a particularly windy day to make your destination. I know of a few that have them at the ready at their sawmill where a quick cut might be needed. But I seriously question if a pair of batteries is equal to a tank of fuel. That's the comparison I'd like to know. I used a Milwaukee saw the other day to trim up some timbers for transport, the instant power was impressive but for the majority of my needs, (heck my short bars are 20") I'll always have my gas saws. I'd think for the average suburban homeowner a battery saw would be fine.

I have watched videos on YouTube and was impressed with performance of the 36v Makita saws. They rate them at a 30cc gas equivalent. My arborist saw is 25cc and with what I saw online the Makita 36v top handle (arborist) saw cuts just as fast as my little screamer (192 TC screams).

I watched a few head to head videos of gas vs electric, The cordless saws are very competitive, sometimes even faster than gas (30cc).

Electric saws aren’t a cut firewood all day saw. They are a good trimming and truck saw. Enough to cut up a small tree (8-10in base) on a charge I would guess. One off putting fact is how heavy electric saws are, the Makita top handle 36v is almost 3lbs heavier than my gas 192tc saw, I kinda expected them to be lighter. The top handle Makita has a boost mode, it’s not in many comparison videos.

If you are going down the trail and a tree you can't move is in the road, a battery saw will work better than a jack knife. Did you remember to charge your battery?

New Ram has built in inverter.
Older F350 uses DC charger.

Yeah I know. I just priced out a 2021 F350 dually so I could give my wife MY Christmas list. About $68K, but I can get it with an outlet and I could save the $100 cost of the inverter.

I keep a DeWalt DCC020I compressor in the vehicle and now a DeWalt Chainsaw. The DeWalt battery seems to last very well for AT LEAST 6 months.

A couple of years ago (B4 I got the DeWalt) I carried a HF Lynxx 40v saw. I was on the way to the dentist and came across a tree about 8 to 10 inches DBH across the road and a truck stopped on the other side with a couple of local guys. They were suitably impressed when I pulled out the chainsaw and proceeded to make the problem go away.

High winds just went through here. Did a reky (sp?) of the property.

Do you mean a Derecho - "a line of intense, widespread, and fast-moving windstorms and sometimes thunderstorms that moves across a great distance and is characterized by damaging winds." The winds can be as strong as in a tornado, but move in a straight line, rather than spiraling. Not to be confused with a microburst, which affects only a small area. (Though a Derecho can spawn numerous microbursts.) I hiked in an area in upstate New York years ago that was hit by one. The trees looked as though someone had laid them flat by running a comb through them: all ripped up, snapped off, or tipped over in a straight line.

I've used a Milwaukee M18 Fuel battery chainsaw a couple of times. I would put it in the category of a good quality 40cc gas saw as far a cutting goes. It would not quite keep up with my Jonsered 2152 (51cc). I've seen videos where it cut the equal some of the better 40cc saws out there (and easily beat some cheapo 40cc saws).

If I had a need for a saw that size, I would not hesitate. I would not consider it for spending a full day in the woods (on even a half day), but it's perfect for some quick clean-up. I've used some other battery saws that you couldn't pay me to use.

I was in Austria walking back to where I was staying in a rural mountain area and all was still and quiet.. this was around 10pm

Out of no where came this Artic Blast. Temp dropped 35 degrees, the noise was like a freight train and trees snapped... never experienced any similar before or since.

Another time I was outside Munich on the autobahn and traffic came to a standstill... I thought accident?

For about a mile could not see the road deck as it was a carpet of evergreen branches... later learned a brief but violent thunder storm did the damage in a matter of minutes damaging cars from flying debris.

If I ever get back I intend to ask about Battery Saws... Stihl is in every hardware store... the farmers with I know with timber use Jonesred

Sorry, I can't spell well.

I meant the (military slang) short form for re·cog·ni·zance mission.

quarter million people in the Province had lost power. Minor issues compared to what some people in other parts of the world are suffering.
