While driving into PA from MD I passed a field with a modest herd of Angus cattle. I noticed there were lots of pretty small calves laying around as well. I didn't think there would be a whole herd of new calves this time of year. Is there something new in the world of bovine husbandry?

What's the price of local beef? I know in this area, the slaughter shops are at 100% capacity trying to keep up with beef. Bow hunters are shocked when they learn these shops will not process venison this year.

I’m no pro but I don’t think you calves dropped right now will be at the butcher before summer ‘22.

Some cow/calf farmers utilize a spring and also a fall calving season. This puts weaned calves being sold in the fall and spring with spring sales usually higher than fall sales. Ken Sweet

Hey Ken, how you doing? Haven't seen you on here for a while but I follow your sale stuff on Tractorhouse.

Correct. With current demand nearly double what it is normally, spring demand will likely be high too. That's just my guess, but the grocery stores have already started rationing as we head into round two of hording. A few months ago freezers were hard to find. I've seen several ads recently for chest freezers "back in stock" just in time. :)

Same in Missouri when I was growing up. Dad didn't do it on our farm, winters were too unpredictable and many farmers would lose too many calves through the winter so it wasn't worth the gamble. Now based on how mild the winters have been the last decade overall, I'd say well worth the gamble now.
