In reality, no matter how cold it is, so long as the engine can spin fast enough (good starting batteries) it will make adequate compression to ignite the diesel.
I had a JD850. It wouldn't start well in the cold. I replaced the 1.2kW solenoid starter with a modern 2.0kW OSGR starter. It fired up each and every time no matter how cold it was. Plus, I didn't even know the tractor had a thermostart either.
