Yanmar v1035-3 won't start without starting fluid

In reality, no matter how cold it is, so long as the engine can spin fast enough (good starting batteries) it will make adequate compression to ignite the diesel.

I had a JD850. It wouldn't start well in the cold. I replaced the 1.2kW solenoid starter with a modern 2.0kW OSGR starter. It fired up each and every time no matter how cold it was. Plus, I didn't even know the tractor had a thermostart either.

it's just the glow plugs not working right.. not a big deal.. and a compression test will show if there's any damage. but nowadays ether has a lubricant added to prevent the wear that would normally happen..

I agree with the others. I ha e been around here for more than a decade. The only broken rings and pistons I ha e seen we have either assumed ether was used based in previous owners stories or a new owner saw them use it or the person admitted to useing ether as few as a couple times.

I am not an expert enough mechanic to understand it all but these engines do not do well with it. I will watch loggers literally run a Cat or JD engine in logging equipment off ether trying to crank one or prime it. Straight ether for 30 seconds or a minute. Watch guys on YouTube spray entire cans into a redlined 7.3 power stroke and not break anything, but just starting one of these little Yanmars just as few as a couple times will blow holes in the pistons or break the rings.

A couple of points, the 80’s models relatively small hp yanmar tractor engines are a much different engine than the much greater hp of a construction US built diesel. Also their are diesel rated ether available that has a higher flash point.
Again there are too many ‘horror’ stories associated with these yanmar tractors and ether to risk it!

You dump either in a pre heating 7.3 (cold) and watch what happens. Do it from a safe distance as it will literally blow the heads off the head bolts.

Yep I am with you. I'm not spraying ether in mine and DO NOT advise anyone else to either. I have read of many broken rings from just a single use or two.

You dump either in a pre heating 7.3 (cold) and watch what happens. Do it from a safe distance as it will literally blow the heads off the head bolts.

Look up zip ties and bias plies. Look for the videos of his truck Slave Lake. You will see. They start the thing and put it in the ketchup (red line, foot on the floor) spraying whole can of "canned consent" into the intake while redlined. I have watched him do it on i believe international engines on a school bus, several big trucks like concrete trucks and other semi sized vehicles.
