The winch sits under the base of the grapple. The cable comes out right at the top of the pedestal where the grapple arm mounts. I don't have photos of the winch itself. I do have this video of winching a log in shortly after I brought it home. As I mentioned, it's a whole lot slower than my logging winch, but it does beat moving the trailer right up to every single log.

You need to get a pic of that cable hooked to a log, I'm assuming the grapple has to clamped to trailer or on ground for winching...........

It doesn't really matter what you do with the grapple while winching. The cable does not run through the grapple. it comes out of the top of the tower that the grapple mounts on. Not much to see when looking at the cable hooked to the log: I use a chain choker on the log. The cable has a grab hook on the end which grabs the chain. I never use the hook on the end of the cable to make a loop with the cable around the log: that's a great way to chew up the end of the cable.

I've put these up before, but if you are interested in seeing a bit of the choker, you can see it here when I was winching out some small logs at Little Hogback Community Forest with the logging winch on my tractor. (The only real differences between this and the winch on the trailer are the speed and the fact that the tractor logging winch has a keyhole on the end of the cable, rather than a grab hook (The keyhole is much less likely to lose its grip on the chain when pulling over rough terrain than a grab hook is.) The choker explanation nd close up starts at around 2:45. Winching small logs at LHCF - YouTube

For a bigger log, and a better quality video, see this video: Winching log 2 at LHCF - YouTube

This was set up mainly as a demonstration fr some folks who had not seen any of tis equipment before. I probably could have just driven down that path, though the sidehill is a bit tricky, especially if you hit a stump or a pothole. With the tractor winch, I could have pulled several of those larger logs at once. With the winch on the forwarding trailer, I'd probably just stick to one large log at a time.

That’s a very good example of how fast a log can roll down a side hill. I have a sharp corner that I dreaded skidding logs by. I learned to cut the logs shorter so the logs stay just on the road. It’s a ways down to the bottom.

Lets try this again, what we have here is a New England language barrier, I not getting at all where the winch is or what orientation that it pulls from, you need to post some pictures of it before next summer to show me exactly where that winch is and which way the cables goes, dont make me come over there I have a bad finger nail......

Near the front of the trailer there is a fixed tower/platform on which the grapple's arm is mounted. Underneath that is the works for the winch: hydraulic drive, gearing, spool for cable, etc. The cable runs from the spool up to near the top of the tower, where it comes out of the tower in through a block that can pivot left and right to direct the cable.

The first picture is copied from the Metavic brochure. It shows the winch block with the cable stretched out to a log.
The second picture is zoomed in on my trailer. The small blue circle shows the winch block near the top of the tower. The larger yellow circle indicates where the guts of the winch is housed.

Figured since the weather was so nice, I'd get more wood split. Found this nice maple missing the top. Apparently there was a squirrel living in the top. Man he went flying out of there when it hit the ground!! His nest is up by the log arch in this photo.

Then this was the bottom of that tree.

Then brought up these pieces of black birch that I cut down a couple years ago.

Then cut to length.

Then split & stacked in the tote.

It didn't all fit, so I started a wood crate.

I built a new outfeed table, but didn't finish reinforcing the legs yet, so maybe next round of pics. I also have to clean out my usual splittin spot then get all set up again. I used the splitter at a friend's last weekend, and going back tomorrow so I left it on the quad for this batch.
