Hi All, My friend has a jd 2030 gas engine tractor that overheats in warm summer temps and automatically shuts down. So far we have put on a new radiator, new water pump, new thermostat, new fuel shutoff solonoid on carb and have done a prestone flush of the water system, filling the sytem up with new radiator fluid/distilled water at 50/50. Also have a clean airfilter, new fuel pump, new plugs and wires. Can anyone think of what is causing this continuing shutdown problem.
Thanks for your advice!

Electrical shutdown like turning off the key? Could be the coil.
Fuel shutdown, sputters & dies? Could be vapor lock, fuel supply, fuel tank cap vent.
Is the overheating proven by a known thermometer?
A 2030 has no automatic high temp shutdown mechanism so there is a failure cause for whatever is happening.

Too much advance of the timing could cause overheating, no idea why it shuts off.
Maybe the coil was wired full time 12volts and is overheating?

Hi RickB Yes it shuts down instantly like turning the key off. A half hour later it will restart. A new coil was installed about a year ago per a mechanics suggestion. Now my buddy is saying that a JD dealership says there is no auto shutdown for high temp like you said. Any other ideas and also is there a "known thermometer" we can buy to install on this tractor.
Thanks
Don

I guess we could check the timing. Can you explain what you meant by the coil being wired full time a little bit more? I don't understand that one.
Thanks

Ok we'll get one and see what happens.

Thanks

I'm not sure the engine temperature has anything to do with the shutdown problem. If the link below shows an accurate electrical diagram, I would look very closely at the circuit breaker. Make yourself up a small trouble light with some clip leads. Clip it to ground and the positive side of the coil. When the engine dies, see if the trouble light goes out.

I suggested an IR thermometer because the OP claims the tractor is overheating. I'd like for him to know whether it is or not. I agree that overheating (actual or suspected) is probably not connected to the shutdowns. The CB could easily be the culprit.

I’m pretty sure a 2030 used a resisted coil with a 12V feed.

I does, my thought is someone bypassed the resistance wire.
