In reality there are a select few that manufacture the emissions components, Donaldson, Bosch and a couple others and they sell to all the engine builders. None of the tractor builders build their own, it's all second and third tier supplied. Kind of like air bags in vehicles. You remember the deal with that (still ongoing).

That makes sense. I’m sure it’s not cheap or easy technology.

Two things I know about my newer truck
It does have all the pollution control devices on it
I use it very hard, so Im pretty confident it will keep those systems hot and burned clean.

Buddy of mine is a Ford tech and says the most problematic Tier4 diesels are the ones that get used for light work or pleasure vehicles.

The same happens with tractors.

People often buy too big of a tractor when they don't really have the work load to keep these DPFs happy.

I understand and do agree with the recommendations of buying the biggest tractor one can afford but with DPF now present on tractors, there is a line between not having enough HP and having too much HP without having enough load for it. Then the problems start to arise.

Most of emissions issues we read here on TBN are related to not load enough the tractor.

is tier 4 required on all diesel tractors? or just after a certain horsepower

Tier 4 or soon to be Tier 5 in the US, it's required on all tractors. However, tractors under 25HP can meet the requirements without any extra stuff attached to it.

From 25 up to 75HP, will need DPF to meet the requirements. Above 75HP, along with DPF, it will also need Adblue.

What are the changes coming for Tier 5?

What are the changes coming for Tier 5?

Most likely, even tighter requirements.

Some tractors would get away with a simple DOC in Tier 4, now they have to use the DPF as well on Tier 5.

In Europe, tractors up to 50 HP, did have to have the emission stuff on it, however from 2021 and on, this is going to change and it will be similar to the US. With tractors above 25HP needing the DPF as well.

Some countries already have an yearly inspection on tractors that will check out stuff like if the emissions system is there and working properly. Other countries will adopt the inspections as well.

I'm not aware that Tier V has been adopted in the US and could not find anything to support that it has.

There is no Tier 5 for North America. The latest rules were set in the Federal Register dated June 29, 2004. Stage 5 Europe has not been carried into North America.
