JD 2030 gas engine tractor overheat and shutdown

I guess we could check the timing. Can you explain what you meant by the coil being wired full time a little bit more? I don't understand that one.
Thanks

The coil operates at less than 12v to protect the points from burning out prematurely. I think they use a "resistance" wire to lower the voltage. This wire could have been replaced, giving the coil 12v all the time.

Where does your factory temp gauge needle indicate for normal running? When it shuts down. My diesel 2030 is maybe the width of the needle past 12 o'clock when at operating temp. It never gets hotter unless the side screens plug when brush hogging in the fall when everything has gone to seed.

Hello K7LN
I'll look into your suggestion. Is the cb internal to the coil or is that elsewhere?
Thanks

The temp gauge does the same as yours. A needle width past 12 oclock and it's probably going to shut down soon.

ok thanks I'll look for it.

Hello K7LN

The cb (circuit breaker), is behind the dash. It will have two studs. One will have a red wire from the alternator. The other stud will have two red wires, one to the key switch and one to light switch. If the circuit breaker opens you will not have lights also. Try the lights when it quits, or have them on and see if they go out when it quits.

The coil should have two wires on the positive terminal. One goes to the starter solenoid to provide 12v for easier starting. the other is the resistance wire that lowers the voltages for running it goes to the key switch.

Ok I'll look for this. This tractor is in Wisconsin (which is of course cold now) and it doesn't shut down during cold weather use. This makes it difficult to test the system like you've suggested. Maybe not until next summer when it gets hot. However, we're going to look for the cb and maybe just replace it and see what happens in the future

Could also be the resistance wire breaking down and failing open (or nearly so) under heat stress.

In this instance a light is preferred. You want to put a test load on that primary ignition circuit. Of course it won't be full bright with the resistance wire even if it is working.

That's not overheating ( as far as the engine is concerned). I think you have an electrical problem. My diesel gets hotter than that when the side screens get covered with chaff/seeds
